A Musical Point of Difference

In a previous article (How to Win the Ratings – Taste & Mood) I wrote about how playing the best music for your target audience’s taste can take you to the top of the ratings. The problem is a competitor with the halo of a powerful breakfast show can be perceived as doing a better job of catering to your audience’s musical desires. You then have to exaggerate your point of difference. A differential advantage that is measurable.

I first learnt about the importance of product differentiation when I read Al Ries & Jack Trout’s famous marketing book, Positioning: The Battle for Your Mind.

7HO FM Hobart - From Worst to First - Part Two

For decades no star was ever brighter than 7HO. It was the dominant commercial radio station in Hobart. In part One of From Worst to First, Greg Smith covers the history of the once dominant station, that by 2003 was on the slide.

So how did Grant Broadcasters’ Ross Turner engineer the station’s massive turnaround by beating Southern Cross Austereo’s Sea.FM & Heart.FM in the ratings in 2014?

7HO FM Hobart - From Worst to First

For decades no star was ever brighter than 7HO.

It was the dominant commercial radio station in Hobart. Led by Bob Cooke & Richard Moore’s breakfast show, the station’s revenue just kept pouring in. In those days, it was a licence to print money. However by 2003 the station was on the slide & it was sold to Grant Broadcasters.

So how did Grant Broadcasters’ Ross Turner engineer the station’s massive turnaround by beating Southern Cross Austereo’s Sea.FM & Heart.FM in the ratings conducted by Xtra Research late last year?

The Life & Times of Rod Brice

Rod Brice has had a remarkable career in radio as a programmer & researcher. When you look at what he has achieved, there’s a lot of sixes in there.

Sex, Drugs & Meditation

Mary-Lou Stephens is the drive announcer at ABC Sunshine Coast. She has written an explosive tell-all book about her life.

“I didn’t want people cutting heroin on my coffee table. I didn’t want a taste. But Todd was persuasive, he always had been. He was a happy druggy and totally unapologetic about his lifestyle. I said yes. He arrived with two guys clearly eager to taste the fruits of their bounty. They cut the drugs and gave me a foil. Enough for a good taste. I didn’t have a syringe. They gave me one of those too. Me and the drugs and the means to administer them, alone in the house by the river. I didn’t have time to take drugs anymore.

Pick your Battles

When I first became a Program Director I had a lot to learn about people management. It was an incredible learning curve, moving from being an on air announcer to an executive position.

Not only did I have to lead the programming staff & help them achieve the ratings goals the station demanded but also deal with other executives who had personal agendas & games to play.

Local versus Networking

Greg Smith is an inductee into the Australian Radio Hall of Fame, and a Director of Radio Today.

One of the biggest changes to radio in the last decade or so has been the growth of networked programs from Sydney & Melbourne.

For the regional markets this has been both a blessing & a curse.

On the plus side this has brought stars & celebrities into the smaller markets at a reasonable cost. Also for management it’s one less program to worry about.

On the downside some markets have felt a backlash & a loss of revenue from local advertisers. Local advertisers love live reads & interaction with the talent. In a lot of cases it was too hard for the talent to deal with so many stations.
