How to Win the Ratings – Taste & Mood

Greg Smith is an inductee into the Australian Radio Hall of Fame, and a Director of Radio Today.

When it comes to winning the ratings, it comes down to giving the audience exactly what they want.

Paul Thompson called it Listener Driven. Some programmers make the mistake of giving the audience what they believe the audience should be into, letting their ego get in the way of being truly Listener Driven. Who’s Your Mentor ?

Greg Smith is an inductee into the Australian Radio Hall of Fame, and a Director of Radio Today.

A great Programmer has great judgement.

Programmers have to make many decisions in order to build ratings & revenue. They problem solve all the time. Their job is to take in all the relevant information & make informed decisions.

Gary Roberts - Survivor (pt 1)

Gary Roberts is one of the best operators I’ve had the pleasure of working with. During his time in Perth he has managed all four FM commercial stations.

He’s unique in many different ways. His strong beliefs have often clashed with parent company group executives from the East. Many a group executive has put off a trip to Perth knowing they’re going to argue the toss with Gary. Having said that, in my experience he was rarely wrong.

How I Stuffed Up

Greg Smith is an inductee into the Australian Radio Hall of Fame, and a Director of Radio Today.

I’ve made plenty of mistakes over the years & as I reflect on them I realise that most of them came from being talked into actions or out of them by other people.

In other words I didn’t trust my own judgement enough.
