Radio Today

What you can learn from Fitzy

Ryan ‘Fitzy’ Fitzgerald is celebrating 10 years with Nova Entertainment (formerly dmg).

Fitzy joined the Nova 919 Adelaide breakfast show just after launch in August 2004. The launch lineup was Jules Schiller, Tony Moclair and Jodie J Hill. Fitzy joined straight out of BB04 as a sports guy after a heated market fight to get him.

Very quickly he became more and more part of the show.

Glenn Shorrock returns to breakfast radio

Glenn, thanks for taking the time to chat with Radio Today and I want to congratulate you on your new breakfast radio gig. But before we get to that, let's briefly recap your long and illustrious career.

You were in The Twilights, Axiom, and of course Little River Band (LRB) and had numerous hits with all of them. You’ve done theatre and cabaret, hosted TV shows like Rock Arena and have been entered into the ARIA Hall of Fame twice – once for yourself in 1991 and once for LRB in 2004.

But in the mid-80s, while you were in between two stints out the front of Little River Band, some may not be aware that you were on breakfast radio in Sydney.

Dan & Maz 'the new generation of radio stars'

Yesterday the final major puzzle piece for the Today network was put in place as Dan & Maz were announced as the new national drive show to replace Fifi & Jules (see the announcement here).

I caught up with Dave Cameron, Head of Today Network, to find out what happened behind the scenes when choosing the show, what this means for The Bump (nights) in 2014 and he compares the appointment of Dan & Maz to that of Hamish & Andy 8 years ago.

Craig Bruce: "our most aggressive marketing in years in 2014"

With today's announcement of the new 2Day Breakfast show, I caught up with Craig Bruce for a bit of a chat about the show, here's what he had to say;

Mark: Congrats on what looks like a strong lineup, with the four members now revealed, can I ask how hard was the decision in the end between the various options you had?

Craig: It wasn’t all that difficult, it became pretty obvious through the process that we had some great chemistry and a strong connection happening with the eventual line-up.

Hot Tomato PD on their Survey 3 result

After today's Survey 3 result for the Gold Coast, I caught up with Program Director of Hot Tomato, David Rymer :-

Mark: With Hot Tomato being the only station of the top 3 to increase share (up 1.1 to 13.4%), you’d be happy with that result ?

David: Yes we are very happy. We have worked hard on the product and there are early signs it has been well received by our listeners.

Mark: How have you managed to close that gap to Sea FM and Gold FM ?

What will 2014 look like ?

(UPDATED Oct 15)

The last month has seen plenty of major radio changes across the country.

Nova 100's Hughesy & Kate announced they would finish up after 12 years on breakfast (here).

Then Fox FM's Matt & Jo pulled the pin after 10 years on the Melbourne breakfast show (here).

In the past week, two-thirds of the 92.9 breakfast show in Perth, Lisa Fernandez (here) and Paul Hogan (here), announced their departures.

Then the news came through that Triple M's drive show Merrick & The Highway Patrol won't be continuing into 2014 (here).

This has led to lots of talk about who could be doing what next year. Let's run through some of the possibilities of what 2014 could look like in these key shifts and then you can have your say.

Ron Camplin: 65 years & still going strong

Last month, 2BS and B-Rock owner Ron Camplin celebrated 65 years in radio. The two Bathurst stations also have cause for celebration as they are finalists for 14 ACRA's this year.

Ron was awarded an OAM Order of Australia for services to Commercial Broadcasting and the Local Community in 1995 and was inducted into the Commercial Radio Australia Hall Of Fame in 2002.

I recently spoke with Ron to find out the secret to his success & longevity. He also reminisces about some of the people he's worked with over the years, and we find out what other jobs he did before radio. You'll be amazed at how many different jobs he had before he was 16 !

The Washup of Survey 2 on the Gold Coast: SCA

After today's survey 2 result for the Gold Coast, I caught up with SCA's Content Director for Sea FM and Gold FM, Andrew Very :-

Mark: Gold FM’s result would have to be the highlight for you today. What stat impressed you the most when looking at the Gold numbers ?

Andrew: To be honest, it’s a terrific result for the duopoly. Gold owns over 40’s and Sea dominates the under 40 demographic. The highlight for Gold is growth 40-54 and in breakfast. Sea holding no.1 breakfast position on the Gold Coast and further growth across the workday is pleasing.

How has Triple M found its place ?

In last weeks post survey 3 chat with SCA's Head of Content Craig Bruce (here), he was pumped for the results Triple M had around the country.

"The Triple M strategy is really exciting for all of us, it’s a hard format to work but we feel it’s starting to find its place in the game."

I caught up with Triple M Operations Manager / Triple M Melbourne CD, Mike 'Fitzy' Fitzpatrick, to find out what has been driving their growth and if he believes Triple M can return to being an icon.
