At This Moment

At this moment someone is sitting in despair at the base of mud-blackened and sewage covered steps surveying what once was a family home and sanctuary. At this moment a soldier lay in the dark unable to sleep, wondering if he’ll ever embrace his unborn child; his wife wonders if her husband will ever come home.

At this moment an orchard worker is pulling into a gas station with a $1.50 in his pocket hoping he has enough money to purchase the gas needed to transport him to and from work so he can earn the money he needs to buy his family food tonight.

At this moment a man is proposing marriage; in a moment she’ll say “Yes”.

At this moment a child is being born, and another is dying.

At this moment a professional beggar is taking a tourist for twenty-bucks in San Francisco; whilst someone else celebrates a pay-rise. At this moment a woman in Mississippi sits in her home, curtains drawn waiting for the phone to ring as she devises excuses for today’s debt collection calls.

At this moment a man is entering court to hear the judgment set against him for embezzlement – he won’t be home tonight. At this moment a young girl sits weeping in the bathroom at school because the classmates she wanted to impress so badly disapprove of the way she’s dressed. At this moment someone is boarding an airplane excited about the long-deserved vacation that lay ahead.

At this moment a starlet discusses with her PR consultant what should and shouldn’t be leaked to the press about her affair with a married man.

At this moment someone is wondering if they’ll ever feel joy again, safe again, loved again, even whole again.

At this moment a man imagines his dead wife is waiting for him at their favourite restaurant. At this moment someone is staring blankly at a wall wondering what has happened to his life, whilst at the same time a distraught mother cries out for her child lost in the rubble after an earthquake.

At this moment where you are, is exactly where you are supposed to be.

At this moment a radio advertising sales person sits pondering whether or not she’s got what it takes to be successful at selling. Another radio account executive has just found a parking ticket taped to his windshield; and yet another sits watching in awe as her client authorizes an airtime schedule – the biggest order she’s ever sold.

At this moment a radio sales person is running late for a meeting; another is convincing his wife that he’ll sell enough to cover next month’s rent; and yet another is considering the colour of her new BMW.

At this moment a radio station owner is wondering if his sales staff will sell enough to enable him to keep the doors ‘open’ for just one more month.

At this moment, indeed inside every moment, you get to decide what it is you’ll do and be today.

You get to decide how you’ll react and be today; most importantly you get to decide who it is you are today.

In 1906 William Ellery Channing wrote some words worthy of our time and attention.

“To live content with small means; to seek elegance rather than luxury, and refinement rather than fashion; to be worthy, not respectable, and wealthy, not, rich; to listen to stars and birds, babes and sages, with open heart; to study hard; to think quietly, act frankly, talk gently, await occasions, hurry never; in a word, to let the spiritual, unbidden and unconscious, grow up through the common – this is my symphony.”

At this very moment you get to choose to rise up, lie down, or fall away.
