The massive National Association of Broadcasters convention is underway in Las Vegas.  The NAB calls it: The world’s largest annual conference and expo for professionals who create, manage, and distribute entertainment across all platforms.”

The convention runs until Thursday and EON Broadcasters Dale Sharp is our man on the Strip, who is going to bring us a daily wrap of the companies “showing off their new wares to eager TV, Radio and Online Geeks.”

Aussie radio peeps attending NAB this year include John Sandles from Grant Broadcasters, Brendan Taylor from Nova Entertainment, SCA’s Guy Dobson, Triple M’s Mike Fitzpatrick, RCS’s Keith Williams, Capital Radio Networks Kevin Blyton and John Pearce from Nova Entertainment.

Here is Day 1 from Dale Sharp:

NAB show 2016 started today in Las Vegas with all technology companies exhibiting and showing off their new wares to eager TV Radio and Online Geeks.

This year we have a few exciting radio releases

Tieline VIA Portable Codec:

The VIA is the latest edition to the tieline line-up which has some great features never seen before in a portable codec.

The VIA encodes in all the common algorithms including AAC, APTX, Mpeg, OPUS and linear.

It has support for network diversity meaning you can use 4g dongles on 2 different networks allowing you do OB’s from events that you may not have been able to use 4G LTE on before.

It has 3 mic channels, 3 headphone channels, talkback for each channel and accepts AES3, AES42  and also has SD card for local playout or recording of the OB as well as USB WDM compatible audio and unbal audio on RCA connectors.

The VIA has WIFI 802.11 a/b/g/n as well as 2 Ethernet ports and inbuilt battery for operation up to 6 hours or the battery can act as a UPS if your running off mains.

Orban 8700

Orban have shown off their new 8700 processor, which has all the other features as its older brother including the MX limiter which declips audio which may be included in the track from the recording.

They have added a sub-harmonic synthesizer which is designed for oldies type formats to give older music better bass, however the Orban guys think that every dance and hiphop station will turn this feature on!

The 8700 also has Rivenna AES67 IP audio and digital MPX and comes with hot swappable power supplies.

I was lucky enough to be allowed into the Orban bus to take a sneak peek inside the unit

Omnia Audio

Omnia Audio have released for NAB new firmware for the Omnia 11, which is a complete rebuild and rethink of their processing.

This firmware is available for all existing Omnia 11 users and is priced at around $900, you can also upgrade as a trial

The new firmware incorporates code written by Hans Van Zutphen, who produces stereotool and incorporates his declipping technology.

I did have a listen to it and it seems to be a big improvement on the old Omnia 11

Wheatstone

The guys from Wheatstone have released for NAB 2 cool things, the new LXE audio over IP console which is quite nice.

The new Airaura Xone has also been on show and is due for release in the 3rd quarter 2016.

I have to say I was not a fan of the Wheatstone processing offerings but the new airaura is a game changer. I only had a quick listen to what it produced and I have to say I am impressed.

This is definitely something you want to take a listen for yourself.

That’s it for me from Day 1 of NAB show 2016 Las Vegas, Check back tomorrow for more techy nerdy goodness
