Jamie Angel on “breaking the form guide” for Game Changers: Radio

Former Assistant Editor

On the latest episode of Game Changers: Radio with Craig Bruce, Triple M content director Jamie Angel stops to chat about his experiences gained from some 30 years in the radio industry.

Growing up on a farm in regional NSW, Angel started out as an announcer at 2NZ in Inverell, and at age 15 he was filling in for the station’s breakfast show before he’d walk straight to school.

“It was funny because I’d go ‘wow I’m a real superstar'” laughed Angel. “It was so fun though, working in those stations. The best radio people I’ve found over the years are those that have done the bush or close to it, they’re better rounded and they bring so much more.”

He also spoke with Bruce about breaking the rules as an announcer. “If I could do one thing differently an hour then I know that I’m at least creatively approaching something from a different place,” Angel said.

The best announcers “can break the form guide, with a sweeper here and a talk back there, but you give it to some jocks and they’ll break the rules… but then the rest of the hour, the messaging is all over the shop.”

Angel would go on to become the 2DayFM content director, a position he only left in 2009 when he moved to Triple M and has since played a key role in defining the Triple M brand.
