We received this from one of our Radio Today readers who came across it in The Age archives.

It was published by the newspaper on January 17, 2004, nearly 10 years ago. With all the current change in the Melbourne breakfast battle (Fox FM and Nova 100), it is interesting to look back and see what the market looked like a decade ago.

These were the breakfast shows The Age outlined :-

FM

Fox: Matt, Jo and Benno (Matt Tilley, Jo Stanley, Chris Bennett, with Adam Richard and Troy Ellis)
Nova 100: Hughesy, Kate and Dave (Dave Hughes, Kate Langbroek and Dave O'Neil)
Triple M: The Cage (Tim Smith, Peter Berner, Brigitte Duclos, Matt Parkinson, James Brayshaw and Mike Fitzpatrick)
Gold: Grubby and DeeDee (Peter Stubbs and Diane Dunleavy)

AM

3AW: Ross Stevenson and John Burns
3LO: Red Symons
SEN 1116: Morning Glory (Garry Lyon, Tim Watson and Billy Brownless)
Sport 927: Big Sports Breakfast (Simon O'Donnell, Anthony Mithen and Michael Christian)

Tracy Bartram had just left after 6 years and Fox FM introduced Jo Stanley onto the show.

Triple M had The Cage and were networking the show into Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide, while Mick Molloy was coming back after 5 years off and was set to do a mid-morning show.

dmg Radio would purchase the new Melbourne FM licence later in the year to give them 2 stations in the market but their opposition were preparing for what that might end up being.

SEN was about to launch with the possibility of 3AW and Triple M being impacted if they were to succeed with the new format.
