Darren de Mello loses out to Hughesy & Kate, joins 6IX

With ARN making the move to put Hughesy & Kate into drive on 96FM from June 22, it means Darren de Mello no longer has a job; not a full-time one anyway.

Darren has been with 96FM since 2001, starting out on nights and moving through a number dayparts, eventually landing the drive shift. According to reports he received the news about Hughesy & Kate taking over while on holidays.

Fairfax press have quoted an ARN spokesperson saying: “Following today’s announcement that the “Hughesy and Kate” Drive Show will be networked into Perth along with the Kyle and Jackie O Hour, I can confirm that as a result, Darren De Mello will be leaving us on 19 June 2015.

“Darren has been integral to the evolution of 96FM, joining in 2001 as the nights announcer and working his way through different on-air slots to his current position of drive announcer. Darren has not only been a great member of the content team but is also a passionate and a well-loved member of the broader team.

“Darren is currently on leave and we will hold a farewell for him in the coming weeks.”

In the meantime, Capital Radio Network has just annnounced that Darren will be joining the 6iX team from Monday June 22. He will be filling in for Gordon O’Byrne who heading off on holidays; with Capital Network Group CD Pete Davidson saying: “Darren is a talented addition to the announcing team in Perth.”
