The Survey 4 results for all metropolitan markets have been released this morning.
On an historic day for Perth radio, Mix 94.5 have lost the #1 position after 100 surveys: 96FM are Perths new #1 radio station. Whilst Mix will be disappointed, they should be congratulated for an achievement unlikely to be matched by an FM station in a metro market again.
Special mentions for a particularly strong result in each market go to: 96FM Perth, Mix 101.1 Melbourne, Nova 106.9 Brisbane, 5AA Adelaide and 2GB Sydney.
See the complete results below:
Market analysis broken down by each network below, and all the various 'we're all winners' media released published here as they come through. Surprisingly, everyone had a great result - at least according to the releases.
SYDNEY
The big winners in Sydney today are 2GB and WSFM with both stations recording strong increases:
-
ARN will be pleased with WSFM who have increased strongly by 0.6% to strengthen their position as #2 FM. Significantly, Amanda & Jonesy have again grown their Breakfast share to a new record high of 9.7% and are now 0.8% off the #1 FM position.
-
However, ARN would be disappointed that MIx 106.5 have fallen, albeit narrowly. Mix fell by 0.3% to 5.2, although it is fair to note that the fall was completely out of target, with the decline being driven by 55+.
-
Southern Cross Austereo have grown both Sydney stations - just. 2Day have improved slightly, and significantly the Kyle & Jackie O Breakfast Show has moved back into double figures to be a clear #1 FM, and well ahead of station average. The Kyle & Jackie O show has now been the #1 FM Breakfast show for five years, quite a remarkable achievement. But will Jonesy and Amanda catch them next time?
-
For SCA, Triple M improved slightly to a 4.7% in what was a flat result for the station with the only growth coming from small increases in Breakfast and Drive. Unhelpfully, Triple M has slipped behind Triple J 25-39.
-
Tough day at the office for DMG on the Nova front. The station has fallen by 0.9% to be in the 5's, driven by falls in each daypart; centred on Breakfast and the workday where there were signfiicant declines.
-
Sister station Smooth had a flat result, in a survey that will be regarded as irrelevant by DMG given the recent relaunch. The Smooth brand was only on the air for 3 weeks of the 10 week survey period.
-
The Macquarie Network have had a very good day. 2GB has moved up strongly by 0.8% to 14.9 and remains a clear #1 overall. Sister-station 2CH has also had a good result, moving up by 0.7% to 5.6, placing it ahead of Mix, Triple M, Smooth and 0.3% behind Nova.
-
For Fairfax, a slight fall for 2UE to 6.3% with large falls in Breakfast, Mornings and Evenings offset by a strong increase in Drive, which was centred on the Sports Today program. This show moved up 2.4% to a 5.8 share.
-
And for the various ABC brands: Triple J were flat, ABC 702 fell by 0.6% to a 10.1% and RN and News Radio were also stable.
MELBOURNE
The big winners in Melbourne today are Mix 101.1 and ABC 774, both of whom have had terrific results:
-
ARN have a strong result in Melbourne, with Mix leading the way. Mix has increased 1.7 to a 7.4% share and overtaken sister station Gold 104.3, Nova and Magic. This was driven by large increases in every demo (except teens) and every shift. For Gold, they have also improved by 0.3% to a 6.8 share and importantly they regained 2% 40-54, where they had taken a recent hit.
-
Southern Cross Austereo have a 'flat day at the office' in Melbourne, with both Fox and Triple remaining relatively stable. Few demos and shifts up, few down, but by and large nothing material to see here, however it is noteworthy that SCA have the #1 and #2 FM stations in the Melbourne market.
-
DMG have seen both Melbourne stations decline, however they will be unconcerned with the fall for Smooth. Given the recent relaunch, this survey result is irrelevant for the station, and doesn't represent the new format. However for Nova, it is a disappointing day. Nova has fallen by 0.6% to a 6.7, and is now the 5th ranked commercial FM station in the market. Nova fell in every shift, and every demo (aside from teens).
-
One up and one down for Fairfax. 3AW, despite a fall of 0.6% remains a clear #1 overall, and Magic is the quiet achiever recording a jump of 0.3% to 6.2%.
-
For the Pacific Star Network, a surprising decline for SEN given the time of the year (footy season). The station fell marginally to a 4.5% share with no significant moves across the dayparts and demos.
-
ABC 774 have moved back into double figures with a 1.2% increase to 10.8. The increase was largely driven from Breakfast where Red Symons had a 3% increase. Triple J saw a big fall of 1.0%, and RN and News Radio were flat.
BRISBANE
Some big movements in Brisbane today, with the stations celebrating the most Nova, 4BC and 4BH:
-
DMG have had a red-letter day in Brisbane with Nova moving to the outright #1 position following a 0.9% increase to an impressive 13.8. Nova are monstering the 18-24 and 25-39 demos.
-
For ARN, a bad day in the Sunshine State. 97.3 and 4KQ both fell, with 4KQ now the lowest ranked commercial station in the market. 97.3 fell by a heavy 1.3% to drop to the #2 position overall, although they remain a long way ahead of the #3 station (B105).
-
Fairfax have had a terrific day. 4BH have jumped 1.2% to 7.8 with increases in every shift, and 4BC have done similarly well, moving up 1.1% to 7.4 and improving in every shift. 4BC have posted very strong increases 55%.
-
For Southern Cross Austereo, a flattish day, but given the increases from Nova, and the symbolism of B105 falling (just) below 10%, they have had better days. B105 fell by 0.5% to a 9.9 with daytimes and drive taking the most hits. Triple M was flat on a 9.8%.
-
An awful result for ABC 612, falling by 1.6% to a 9.6 share. Their losses mirrored 4BC's gains. Classic FM fell by 0.6%, and all the other ABC signals were flat.
ADELAIDE
There was one big winner in Adelaide today, and that was DMG who have between them had a monster day. If anyone lives nearby, can they feed the Hulme's dog tonight - they'll probably be home very late.
-
5AA has seen a strong increase of 1.6% to 14.9 which places it Adelaide's #1 station by nearly 3%. 5AA saw big increases in every daypart, including weekends where it is footy-centric.
-
Nova has consolidated its increase in S3 to grow by a further 0.5 to 11.6%, and place it within striking distance of Mix 102.3. The Nova growth was driven by significant under 40 movements and a very strong Breakfast result: the Nova Breakfast show is now 0.4% off the #1 FM position (just behind Mix).
-
ARN have had mixed results with Cruise falling slightly, and Mix improving slightly. Cruise copped a hit in target from the 5AA growth, whilst Mix added 0.3% overall to hold the #1 FM position. Whilst the Mix daytimes perform well, Breakfast is well under station average and this will undoubtedly be the focus point in the short term.
-
Southern Cross Austereo have had a bad day in Adelaide: SAFM fell marginally by 0.2% and Triple M fell by 0.6% to 8.5 and copped some big whacks in Breakfast, Mornings and Afternoons particularly. The Adelaide market for SCA continues to be a hard slog with both of their stations now clearly the lowest ranked of the commercial FM'ers.
-
For the ABC, Triple J fell heavily, whilst the other brands were relatively flat.
PERTH
Perth has had an historic survey today with Mix 94.5 being toppled from the #1 position after 100 surveys. Perth has a new #1 radio station: 96FM has taken the top spot.
In Perth by network, starting of course with Fairfax:
-
96FM is #1 overall. Strong increases in every demo under 40, and in every daypart aside from drive. The 18-54 profile of 96FM will be impressive following this result. Celebration time at Hay Street. 96FM is on 13.3% overall, edging out Mix on 13.2%
-
96FM's sister station, 6PR has also improved, marginally. 6PR has added 0.2% to move to 8.9% overall.
-
For Southern Cross Austereo, the acceptance that #1 wouldn't last forever for Mix will still be a tough pill to swallow. Mix has, ironically, improved it's share slightly to 13.2% - just a smidge behind 96FM. Unhelpfully, 92.9 had a tough day at the office, falling 0.7% to a 11.4 share, narrowly ahead of Nova.
-
Nova fell by 0.2% to record an 11.0 share, however recorded growth in all under 40 demos.
-
6IX has quietly put on 0.7% to be just shy of a 6 share. It saw growth in all dayparts, and all driven 65+, so the station is clearly focusing on the absolute top end of the market.
-
For the ABC stations, all were largely flat, aside from Triple J who fell by 0.7%.
However despite the narrowness of the win, in Perth, today belongs to 96FM.
