Richard Stubbs calls it a day

Staff Writer

Another seismic shift on the Melbourne radio scene; this time at the ABC, where Richard Stubbs has announced he’s leaving the national broadcaster.

After almost 11 years behind the microphone at 774, “Stubbsy” today announced he won’t be back next year and will sign off for good this Friday.

Richard’s decided that it’s ‘time to go’ and that there are other opportunities that he wants to explore away from radio, where he’s been a fixture for 30 years.

The stand up comic made a name for himself in the 80s as part of 3XY’s “XY-Zoo” breakfast show, before joining Triple M in mornings.

After the departure of the D-Generation, he moved to breakfast in 1992 with Eddie McGuire, Brigitte Duclos and Brad McKenzie joined him for The Richard Stubbs Breakfast. He retired (for the first time) in 1997, before returning to radio in 2000 on 101.1 TT FM.

He joined 774 ABC in 2006 as the afternoon presenter.  And now he’s announced his retirement (again), wanting to do ‘other’ things.

Let’s hope those ‘other things’ include more stand-up and maybe even a long promised book – fiction, not autobiographical.  He’s already done that.
