ABC plays highest proportion of Aussie music of any broadcaster

Former Assistant Editor

November is Aus Music month, not just for triple j, but for the entire of the ABC.

The ABC has announced its radio and TV programs for the month and taken the opportunity to reveal that it plays the highest proportion of Australian music of all broadcasters.

58% of music on triple j was Australian over the last 12 months, while Classic FM played over 50% of Aussie performances for the first time.

Highlights in programming for November include a special Spicks and Specks Reunion on ABC TV and iView, and the start of new TV series The Set hosted by triple j’s Linda Marigliano and Dylan Alcott.

There’ll also be a special concert broadcast of Missy Higgins and Friends Live across ABC TV and Double J.

“This show is going to be so fun, I’ve always wanted to play in the Melba Spiegeltent and to have such incredible guests joining me on stage just tops it off,” said Higgins.

“My career all started because of winning triple j Unearthed way back in 2001 so to be invited by the ABC to headline their Ausmusic Month celebration feels like a pretty cool ‘coming full circle’ moment. It’s going to be very special.”

In addition, there’ll be the following radio highlights:

  • ABC Jazz and Classic FM will be broadcasting live from music festivals.
  • ABC Local will be playlisting 100% Australian music every Monday.
  • triple j will be recognising all the best moments from the year at their annual J Awards; celebrating their favourite artists with Ausmusic T-Shirt Day; and featuring all-Australian Like A Versions, Live At The Wirelesses and J Files across triple j and Double J.
