Ben Harvey opens up on his dad’s cancer diagnosis

Former Assistant Editor

Sharing intimate aspects of your life can be one of the hardest challenges as a radio presenter, but Ben Harvey recently opened up about his father in a candid segment on Nova 91.9 Breakfast.

Speaking on the Ben & Liam show, Harvey spoke about how difficult it had been to hear the news that his dad had cancer, and what he’s been going through since finding out.

“About two, three weeks ago dad called me and told me he had cancer,” said Harvey, shakily. “It shocked me because growing up you think your dad’s invincible.”

He continued, “For the first time in my life I heard the fear in his voice that he was scared to tell me the news.”

Harvey explained that the cancer was found in his dad’s tongue, and spoke about his difficulty dealing with the emotion around the operation he needed to have.

“The good news is this morning I woke up to a text from my dad,” he said and the text said the cancer has been completely removed.

His dad also requested a song by Birds Of Tokyo, ‘Two Of Us’.

“Sometimes it takes something like a cancer scare to realise what’s important in life. I’m sorry it’s taken me so long to tell you that I love you,” said Harvey, as his on-air partner Liam Stapleton looked on, visibly moved.
