Ben & Liam bring back alter-egos to talk ABC privatisation

Staff Writer

triple j Breakfast presenters Ben and Liam have pulled out their commercial alter-egos ‘Zipper and The Shitstick’ once again, this time to give listeners a taste of what a privatised ABC radio might sound like.

In the skit, Liam’s Zipper character keeps the gruff signature commercial radio delivery but sticks to the conservative perceived ethos of triple j’s supposed love for Australian music, drugs and “claiming we’re impartial broadcasters but actually being massive lefties.”

They also added another character to vouch for the station’s commitment to diversity, with newsreader Brooke Boney taking on the role of ‘Token Woman’.

The send-up follows on from the alarming news that a majority of sitting Liberal members voted in favour of selling off the ABC at a recent party meeting, which has thrown open the floodgates for a number of think pieces for and against the national broadcaster.

The last time Ben and Liam put on their commercial radio hats was in a retort to a less-than-kind segment from time-slot rivals Triple M, the clip of which has almost surpassed 1.5 million views on Facebook.

This morning’s video has surpassed 130,000 views on Instagram since posting.

I thought these guys were a bit light on that’s until I heard Zipper and the Shitstick. I’ve warmed to them and Zipper has to be the funniest thing I’ve ever heard. Hope these boys aren’t expecting a job at triple M anytime soon.
