Ben Stevenson secures new gig at Hit Coffs Harbour

Former Assistant Editor

Radio Today’s annual rundown of the Top New Talent to Watch was released earlier this month, and one of those named – Ben Stevenson, has just secured a new job with the Hit Network in Coffs Harbour.

Ben recently wrapped up his time with Hot100 Darwin Breakfast after three years, where he had taken the show to a massive share of 35.2%.

Now he’ll head to Hit105.5 Coffs Coast to host a brand new Breakfast show, an offer that was completely unexpected, but no less pleasing.

“I was over the moon. I’ve wanted to be a part of SCA for so long,” he told Radio Today.

“I told my mum straight away, she was really happy for me (also because it meant I wouldn’t have to borrow money from her), then I told my dogs.”

Ben says he was originally hopeful of making the Top Talent list but became less optimistic when he didn’t see his name in the first few when clicking on the article.

“The further I went down the list the less hopeful I got,” he says. “I was second or so from the bottom so you guys totally psyched me out. I couldn’t believe it at first. I kept checking the list to make sure I hadn’t forgotten how to read.

“Darwin in general feels forgotten about by the rest of the country, and I was feeling the same with my radio work. So to get recognition was such a great feeling.”

The offer was particularly timely, especially given Ben didn’t have a backup plant for if no offers came in.

“I think thats my style. Force myself in to a corner so I have to fight my way out. It’s a good motivator. I knew it had to be radio so was willing to wait until something came along.”

As for what he’ll be bringing to the Coffs Harbour audience?

“As many banana puns as I possibly can before A.B. (my co-host) threatens me with violence. So keep your eyes …peeled… for those.”

Hit105.5 Coffs Coast’s new Breakfast show starts April 9.
