David Collins loses cancer battle

Former Assistant Editor

Former KOFM Breakfast host David Collins passed away overnight, after a battle with cancer.

David, who was 60, died peacefully yesterday evening. Newcastle’s KOFM announced this morning that long-time friend and radio partner-in-crime Tanya Wilks was by his side.

His first gig in Australia was with 2WS Sydney in 1976, after starting out in radio in London.

David and Tanya were Australia’s longest-running radio Breakfast team, starting out at 2HD in 1991, rating #1 in their first survey together, before switching over to KOFM.

Their last show together aired in 2013, after which David worked the Drive shift for two further years.

Tanya posted a tribute to David on her own Facebook page this morning.

“I promised two things … one that I would be there to the very end and two that I would make you into a meme.

“Finally I get the last say …miss you already you gorgeous bugger.”

“David was a formidable figure on the Newcastle airwaves for more than two decades, alongside his life-long friend Tanya,” said KOFM general manager Ashley Myatt.

“I know David’s passing will be met with deep sadness from his former colleagues, and our loyal KOFM listeners who enjoyed waking up to his stories, opinions and jokes over many years.”

“Our thoughts go out to his family and friends.”

A tribute to David ran this morning on KOFM’s current Breakfast show Tanya and Steve.
