Dynamic Duos: Hit96.1’s Mitchell & Michael on adapting to regional and the challenge of daily content

Former Assistant Editor

“Normally we go down to the pie shop and if Lisa approves we’ve done good,” say Mitchell and Michael of their post-show routine.

Mitchell Tinley and Michael Ross have been hosting Breakfast at Hit96.1 Limestone Coast for the past nine months, taking a tried and tested detour into regional radio to establish themselves in a daily slot.

Mitchell and Michael started out together hosting a show at Murdoch University.

After trying to sell their show to the FM networks, the fresh faces were given a shot at Perth’s Hit92.9, ending up on Sunday nights before the move across the breadth of the country to Mt Gambier.

Chatting with Radio Today for the third edition of ‘Dynamic Duos’, the pair explain the difficulties of not only moving from metro to regional, but of moving from a weekly to a daily show.

Even after nine months, they don’t feel as if they’ve fully won over their audience. “It’s like being the third stepdad,” they laugh.

“They’re tired of people leaving. At the end of the day we’re not their real dad.”

Finally, they reveal a desire to one day be the savours of 2DayFM Breakfast, after which they’d “ride off into the sunset”.
