Em Rusciano pulls Emsolation podcast from SCA’s PodcastOne

Former Editor & Content Director

Em Rusciano’s podcast Emsolation will from next year be producer inhouse by her production company, ending the performer’s relationship with Southern Cross Austereo’s (SCA) PodcastOne Australia.

Ruscaiano launched the twice-weekly podcast with best friend, television writer Michael Lucas, in April during Melbourne’s intense lockdowns.

The podcast started out on PodcastOne Australia, with the duo since making 90 episodes for the platform.

Rusciano said the time was right to take control.

“My production company is going to make it. I will wholly own it. It’s very exciting. The time is right. It’s a bit scary, because basically that means I’m now completely financially responsible for paying everyone and we’re hoping to get some great sponsors on board,” she said on the last Emsolation episode of the year.

“To my patrons, this is where you definitely come into play. You’ll help us keep going next year as a female-led fully independent podcast. And if you’d like to become a patron and help us keep going next year, you can do that at emrusciano.com/listen. But, yea, this podcast will be totally made by inhouse here at Em Rusciano Productions, which is pretty exciting. Honestly, it’s the first kind of thing of its kind that I’ll be doing with my little production company.”

She also thanked SCA’s PodcastOne for backing the podcast in the first place.

“I want to thank PodcastOne. Yes, we’re leaving the nest, but they inspired me to make this podcast in the first place. They gave me the confidence to do it. So thank you very much PodcastOne,” she said.

Rusciano has previously spoken about her ongoing complicated relationship with PodcastOne, based on her tumultuous time at the helm of SCA’s 2DayFM Breakfast.

“I’m still processing what happened with 2DayFM Breakfast. I’m still working through that in therapy. I’m still working through my whole relationship with SCA – and ironically my podcast comes from PodcastOne. So it’s almost like an abusive relationship that I keep going back to,” she told Craig Bruce’s Game Changers: Radio podcast.

Next year, under Rusciano’s control, Emsolation, will be scaled back to one episode per week, down from this year’s two. It will come out on Thursdays from early February.

“When Michael and I first started this in April, we didn’t really know what was going to happen. We didn’t know if anyone was going to listen. We didn’t know, I mean, we thought our conversations were entertaining, we didn’t know if other people would. But it turns out, thousands of you do, and I’m just so grateful, because this is something that I’ve been able to make that has been truly, true to myself and my best friend, and unfiltered, unrestrained, and for those of you who are still here – I understand we probably lost a lot of people along the way – but for those of you, if you’re still here, if you’re listening to this episode, I see you, I appreciate you, your ears and your interest has really kept me going,” she said.

She noted the reduction in episodes is due to her other commitments ramping up next year in light of the slow return of the live sector and her growing company.

“So, I’ve got shows and jobs and things coming in and the kids, and I want to really still enjoy it, I don’t want this to be a chore,” she said.

Is it just me…. or does anyone else think Em is just a tad overrated?
