Gamechanger Wendy Harmer: International Women’s Day special edition – AUDIO

Staff Writer

It’s only fitting that today on International Women’s Day, Radio Today features Craig Bruce’s Game Changers: Radio interview with Wendy Harmer.

Harmer really was the trial blazer; the first woman to star and succeed on capital city breakfast radio.

She joined 2Day FM breakfast with Paul Holmes and Peter Moon for The Morning Crew in 1993 and hosted the #1 FM show for 11 years.

Prior to breakfast radio, Harmer hosted ABC TV’s hugely popular, The Big Gig.

Radio and media, in general, had long been a male-dominated domain.

A lot has changed over the years with women now taking leading roles and succeeding in the primetime shift of breakfast radio.

Harmer paved the way for successful women to ‘star ‘ in breakfast; people like Jackie O, Chrissie Swan, Em Rusciano, Robin Bailey, Meshel Laurie, Amanda Keller, Heidi Lee Anderson, FiFi Box, Jo Stanley and countless others.

Harmer said, “It’s truly gratifying to see so many women leading the way in radio right around the country. We’ve come a long way since the mantra from radio executives was, ‘women don’t like to listen to other women’.

“Women are bringing their smarts, humour and professionalism to the airwaves and are becoming some of our best loved on-air personalities and listened to by both men and women. It’s a revolution that’s long overdue, and it’s a thrill to be a part of it all.”

Wendy Harmer now appears on ABC 702 Sydney mornings.
