Gotye goes #1 in USA

Staff Writer

In awesome news for Australian music, Melbourne singer/songwriter Gotye has overnight gone to number 1 on the US charts.

'Somebody that I used to know' is the first number 1 in the US in 12 years, the last one being Savage Garden 'I knew I loved you'. Notably, Gotye's album 'Making Mirrors' also entered the top 10 of the US Billboard charts, moving to number 7.

The move on the top spot was helped by the Glee cast performing a cover of the song on Fox TV in the US on April 10th and Gotye and Kimbra's appearance on Saturday Night Live at the weekend. In Billboards April 9-15 tracking period, the song sold 542,000 downloads, making it the 4th highest selling song since measurement of digital downloads began.

Radio airplay for the song is impressive. Gotye has now achieved 72 million audience impressions across all formats in the US market according to Nielsen BDS. That's not a misprint: 72 million. Nice.

Below is the Glee cast covering Gotye.
