Has 2DayFM ripped off Virgin Radio for their latest TVC?

Former Assistant Editor

They say imitation is the more sincere form of flattery, and 2DayFM’s latest TVC appears to be heavily inspired by a recent commercial for Chris Evans‘ Virgin Radio Breakfast show in the UK.

As originally pointed out by The Sun, The Virgin Radio TVC is a couple of months old and was inspired by a scene in the 1989 movie Uncle Buck starring John Candy.

The ad sees Evans interrogated by his son about his new show as they share Breakfast.

“Where’s your new Breakfast show? What time?” asks his son.

2DayFM’s recently-released commercial sees Grant Denyer sitting opposite daughters, asking eerily similar questions.

“What breakfast show are you? Who’s on it?” ask Denyer’s daughters.

Asked what type of music the show will have, both Evans and Denyer respond “The best music!”

Here’s the original starring Evans:

While 2Day’s version starring Denyer is below:

Not really any different to Nova ripping off the Capital TVC’s a couple of years ago.

To be fair, your regular punter isn’t going to watch the ads back to back like we are here. It’s relatable and right up the alley of the audience they’re going for. I reckon it’s a good ad altogether.

Both great ads. Much better than ‘You’ve been listening to NOVA’s Breakfast show for far too long’ IMO.

Too bad 2DayFM Breakfast can’t imitate good ratings.

Radio Today needs to do a story about a UK radio station that copied something from an Australian station in the last decade.

I love fiction.

I’m struggling to remember a time when Australian radio stations didn’t rip off ads from the US or UK.

2SM and the remarkable mouth in the 70s. Triple M badly re-dubbed some US ads in the 90s. 2Day also in the 90s…

Jayzuz, be original for God’s sake. The concept obviously straight ripped, like majority of mainstream Australian media. Come on, let’s get original!!

I don’t see the similarity? One has Chris one has Grant…something I’m missing?
