Radio’s power to unite communities during times of crisis has rarely been more obviously than during the coronavirus pandemic, and the latest station to bring together locals to celebrate their connection via social distancing was SCA’s Hit Mackay and the Whitsundays.

The station organised for local businesses, council members, and over 12 schools from the area to participate in a simultaneous ‘Virtual Flash Mob’ to The Weeknd’s song ‘Blinding Lights’.

The tune was an easy pick, with a massively popular TikTok dance already being a viral trend in 2020.

In the lead up to the big event, Hit Mackay and the Whitsundays Breakfast duo Sam & Rach gave everyone a demonstration for how to do the dance.

“It’s almost virtual flash mob time, I hope you guys are excited,” said Rach.

“You’ve got to get nice and warmed up, the song will play on the radio in the next minute or so. Get your video set up, get it recording and send us your videos when it’s all said and done.”

They were inundated with submissions by people wanting to participate, and it all came together for the Flash Mob last Friday at 9:30am.

Check out the final video before. Pretty impressive!
