Hit Network’s Jack Laurence to launch comedy web series
The Hit Network’s Jack Laurence has called in favours to follow a dream.
The Southern Cross Austereo (SCA) jock has flexed his creative muscle with the launch of his first original comedy web series Please Rewind.
Set in a suburban video store and starring SCA colleague Luke Toohey, the six-part series was inspired by morning walks with his wife and dogs.
The Hughesy & Kate anchor says it got him wondering how the local video store has managed to survive in the era of the live stream.
Months later, Laurence had written a script and began shopping it around. But it became a drawn-out process to get the project up and running.
“I naively thought that I’d write this pilot and be able to shop it around to some production companies or TV networks and get some money to create it. This, I discovered, was far from the truth. No one would so much as read the script.
“So, instead of just chucking it in the top draw and forgetting about it, I decided to start my own production company, Mashed Pumpkin Productions, and wrote it over the Christmas survey break.”

After calling in a few favours and securing some financial backing from Rhys Holleran (former Austereo CEO) and Scott Chapman (former SCA Gold Coast Sales Manager), they began filming.
Even Hughes was happy to jump on board and make a guest appearance.
Now that it’s about to be released, Laurence admits to being somewhat nervous about how it will go down, but has high hopes for his project.
“This show has been the last two years of my life and I’ve never been more terrified of anything in my life and I’ve done stand-up comedy!
“But I would love nothing more than to be able to call up the team and tell them we’ve been picked-up, we’re making another season and this time I get to pay them!”
All six episodes of Please Rewind will be released online November 1.
