Grant Broadcasters hires former B105 music director Jake Powell

Staff Writer

Former B105 music director Jake Powell has a new gig with Grant Broadcasters on the Sunshine Coast.

Powell is replacing Ben Cullen who is leaving to join Ronnie Stanton Media to head up its virtual music department at MUSync.

Grant Broadcasters said Cullen’s contribution to the station could not be understated.

“Having been part of the team for 12 years, he is a part of the fabric of the radio station and will be greatly missed from a personal and professional point of view from everyone on staff,” Grant Broadcasters said in a statement. “We appreciate Ben’s work ethic and outstanding skills, and wish him all the best in his new endeavours.”

Cullen was assistant music director for Hot 91 and Zinc 96, as well as hosting weekdays on Hot 91 between 10:30am and 3pm.

The regional radio company said the silver lining of Cullen’s departure, however, was bringing Powell into the family.

“While other networks are shedding staff or not replacing those that leave, Grant Broadcasters are committed to our local footprints around the country. Jake’s experience, passion for the industry and connection to the Sunshine Coast region means he will be a fantastic fit for the team.”

Powell was with Southern Cross Austereo (SCA) for over eight years, starting out as a panel operator and announcer in Newcastle, and ending up as B105’s music director in Brisbane. He left SCA in August, and has since been a part-time operations assistant for NOVA Entertainment in Brisbane.

He said he was excited to be joining the Sunshine Coast team.

“The Sunshine Coast has always been a second home to me, so I am very excited to be part of Ryan and Chris’ team at Hot91,” he said. “I am very thankful for this opportunity and looking forward to being within walking distance to Sunshine Plaza.”

Of Cullen’s new role, Ronnie Stanton said: “We are now doing music logs for stations all over the world, and are thrilled to have Ben’s expertise, attention to detail and passion for great radio.”

What a pick up! Serious talent that one. SCA makes another mistake in letting serious talent leave.
