Marty Sheargold to host Melbourne’s Triple M Breakfast in 2021

Former Editor & Content Director

The rumour mill can stop spinning, because Southern Cross Austereo (SCA) has finally confirmed that Marty Sheargold will take over Triple M Breakfast in Melbourne in 2021.

The Marty Sheargold Show will kick off in the early hours of January 18 in Melbourne, and will be syndicated across Triple M’s 49 stations from 3pm to 4pm.

Until recently, Sheargold was on NOVA Entertainment’s Nova Network as part of the national Kate, Tim & Marty Drive show. He left and was replaced by comedian Joel Creasey.

Sheargold has previously worked on Triple M, notably as part of The Shebang in Sydney alongside Fifi Box, who now co-hosts Breakfast on SCA’s Fox FM with Brendan Fevola. Fox FM will be joined by Nick Cody next year following the departure of Byron Cooke.

Triple M said Sheargold was “one of Australia’s funniest humans” who had an enviable TV and radio legacy. He’s wry, whip-smart and nonchalant, according to the broadcaster.

He takes over the Breakfast slot from long-serving Eddie McGuire and Luke Darcy, who helmed The Hot Breakfast for over a decade.

Sheargold said he wanted to make the absolute most of the opportunity, and then retire.

“Firstly I’d like to congratulate The Hot Breakfast on an amazing run. They are all incredibly talented, highly regarded people in the radio business and I wish Eddie, Luke and Rosie continued success with whatever they choose to do next,” he said.

“I’m honoured to be returning home to Triple M, the brand that kick started my radio career. To be given the opportunity to have my own show at a network I consider the backbone of FM radio is a true privilege. It is the job you hope for, but fear may never happen.”

SCA’s chief content officer, Dave Cameron, said: “Getting Marty Sheargold back on Triple M in 2021 just made the world feel a little bit right again. Melbourne at breakfast, and Australia in the afternoon, is about to experience one of this country’s finest comedians and broadcasters with a show guaranteed to be unlike any other. There is only one Marty Sheargold and there is only one home of rock, sport and comedy. We are so excited to welcome home The Marty Sheargold Show to Triple M and SCA. 2021 cannot come quick enough.”

Triple M’s head of content, Mike Fitzpatrick, said: “When you’re creating a show with one host you need a unique performer who cares about, and understands, the medium. Marty’s style and attitude fits hand in glove with the Triple M brand and we’re stoked to have him back where it all began. He’s also asked me to ensure I use the term ‘prodigal son returns’ in any quote I give to the press, so there it is.”

Looks to me they’re trying to copy the Christian O’Connell show on the basis that solo radio is cheaper and can work just as well.

This is arrogant.
Marty needs support. He’s failed several times in the past. The older and grumpier he gets, the funnier he gets… but he needs people around him. This is about his pay cheque, not the quality of radio or winning.
This is the holiday home on the great ocean road and the grandkids getting through private school.
Well done Marty but this will alienate the M’s audience in melb.

James, what?

Copying Christian Oconnel?
Firstly, he doesn’t do a solo show. He has a guy called Jack and a newsreader with him for the whole show. That’s not a solo show. If it is, Kyle and Moonman are solo shows. Don’t be fooled by the name of the show buddy.

Secondly, if they were actually copying anyone with a solo show, it would be Mike Perso, Neil Mitchell, Ben Fordham and Jamie Angel.

Pauly,

Done a lot of radio have you?
Of course he’ll have people around him.

Re-read the story before you comment.

No surprise Radio Today has left the SCA bashers in their “moderated” comment section

Since Viv moved in, this has turned in to an even worse version of Mumbrella. But you’ll probably never read this as it will be “moderated”.

I’ve worked at all 3 networks and I can tell you this. They each have passionate radio people who work for them day in and day out and your poisonous comments strike at the heart of the people who work hard – the same people you supposedly voice your support for. So have some heart and some compassion.
Support the industry instead of bashing it. It’s a fools errand to tear down the industry you write about.
