Mel Greig farewells Wave FM

Former Assistant Editor

Two and a half years after returning to radio at Wollongong’s Wave FM, Mel Greig has announced she’s moving back to Sydney.

Mel, who had taken time off in the lead up to the announcement, returned to farewell listeners, explaining that she needed a fresh start for the next chapter of her life.

“When I moved to the Illawarra I was married, about to have babies. That didn’t eventuate, divorced, became quite isolated.

“The Illawarra is amazing, I love this place, I have amazing friends here. But when you get up at 3:20 every day it takes it’s toll.

“I’ve decided to put my health and happiness first,” shedding tears. “I was unhappy with the breakfast lifestyle… it was so hard.”

Mel had re-ignited her career at Wave after a turbulent period that followed the infamous Royal Prank in 2012.

She didn’t go into the details of the new opportunity she would be taking up, with speculation surrounding the potential for a new reality television show, but hoped to make an announcement soon.

Wave FM general manager Tony Williams told the Illawarra Mercury he was sad to see Mel go, and would miss her, hoping her new plans will “pan out”.

He wasn’t able to confirm whether fill-in host Jade Tonta would become Mel’s permanent replacement, or whether another announcer would be hired.
