Radio Today Podcast: Rumour mill in overdrive & what radio will look like in 2021

Former Editor & Content Director

The radio rumour mill is in overdrive over who will get the big gigs next year.

Who is set for 2Day FM Breakfast in Sydney? And Triple M Breakfast in Melbourne? And what other shake-ups could be on the horizon?

The Radio Today Tonight team explores all the options, and also questions if we’re being led astray.

Plus, Christian O’Connell sent out a rogue tweet, the content bosses reveal their hopes and fears for 2021, and we wonder why iHeartRadio has gone so quiet.

This week on Radio Today Tonight:

  • After Triple M Melbourne confirmed Eddie and Luke won’t return to Breakfast in 2021, the Marty Sheargold rumours escalated – but are they really true? (03:05)
  • The content chiefs share their take on what commercial radio might sound like in 2021 (13:45)
  • After telling Radio Today that iHeartRadio Australia is preparing to reveal a shift in strategy, its owner ARN has fallen silent on the overhaul (19:55)

Radio Today Tonight will come to you each Thursday, mixing the biggest news of the week, along with a discussion of all the personalities, politics and pressures involved in the audio industry.

It will be jointly hosted by Radio Today editor Vivienne Kelly and publisher Jake Challenor.

Kate Langbroek is moving back to Melbourne so presumably she fits into this puzzle somewhere. Maybe not with Hughesy though given his established partnership with Ed.

What about Perth, guys? I’m disappointed you didn’t chat about the rumoured SCA changes.

Hey Dan, thanks for the feedback.

We did chat about the Perth changes in the episode a week prior (E8), and asked 96FM boss Gary Roberts how he was feeling about the rumours too. I’m hearing an announcement could be imminent, so we may well end up covering Perth on this week’s show!
