Radio Today grows traffic by over 130% in November

Staff Writer

Radio Today’s traffic soared by 135% year-on-year in November, delivering 481,240 page views.

This gave the site its second-strongest month in its history, only falling behind December 2013, when a traffic spike was largely driven by ARN’s transformation of Mix into KIIS in Sydney, and 2Day’s reveal of its post-Kyle & Jackie O Breakfast show, with Merrick, Jules & Sophie with Mel B.

The most popular stories in November of this year included Jodie Oddy abruptly leaving Mix 102.3 in Adelaide, as well as speculation as to who her replacement will be, Sally & Erica’s equally abrupt end over on the ABC’s triple J, and the new lineup for Fox FM Breakfast in 2021.

Southern Cross Austereo’s changes to the Perth market also added to the traffic spike, as did 2Day FM’s new Breakfast lineup.

Radio Today’s inaugural 30 Under 30Awards – including the Readers’ Choice Award taken out by Harnsle Joo at 2GB – increased engagement too.

The publication’s publisher and content director Jake Challenor said despite many broadcasters downsizing this year, the spike is testament to the relevancy of, and interest in, the medium.

“It’s been a challenging year, but the industry has risen to the occasion and made sure the market continues to pay close attention to radio, audio and podcasting through trade media outlets like Radio Today,” he said.

“November’s numbers are also a credit to Vivienne Kelly, who only arrived as editor in September and has already broken many big stories, launched a podcast and introduced the site’s rebrand.”

The Radio Today mailing list has also grown by close to 10% – 9.93% to be exact – over the 90 days to November 30.

Podcast downloads for the new Radio Today Tonight offering were 3,913 for November, with the special 30 Under 30 edition proving most popular.

Page views don’t mean much.

How many unique visitors? That’s the real story.

I’ve loved the interaction from Vivienne with the comments. Radio Today seemed to have less engagement the last couple years compared to previously but has picked up recently so well done V!
