Singles Report: Carly Rae Jepsen takes one of 2017’s standout singles to radio

Staff Writer

DJ Khaled and Carly Rae Jepsen are the top picks in this week’s Australian Singles Report. While Khaled’s busy year has seen the producer ship four radio hits, including the ARIA Platinum single I’m The One ft. Justin BieberQuavoChance The Rapper and Lil Wayne, Jepsen drops her first radio single since 2015 album E•MO•TION (not counting promotional single It Takes Two with Lil Yachty).

Besides 2011 smash hit Call Me Maybe, Carly Rae has mostly struggled to translate her strong and loyal following into charting success. However, she is making a fresh play for the chart domination she deserves with Cut To The Feeling.

The track has already received high acclaim, with SPIN declaring it the best song of 2017 so far. And CRJ is all too familiar with the Hot 100 – Call Me Maybe reigned at the top of the chart for eight consecutive weeks in 2012.

DJ Khaled had another high-powered collab snapped up by Australian radio last week. This time it’s Wild Thoughts, which features Rihanna and Bryson Tiller. Not surprisingly, the track was jumped on by Nova, KIIS and the entirety of the Hit regional network, seeing adds from a total of 154 stations.

Another Sony release, Calvin Harris’ Feels ft. Pharrell WilliamsKaty Perry and Big Sean, was always going to make a strong claim at radio. It panned out just as expected, being playlisted by the ACE Radio Network, Ash London LIVE and Smallzy’s Surgery.

There is an abundance of movement across the Top 10 on this week’s Hot 100 chart. The only spot remaining steady is #1, which once again belongs to Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee’s Despacito (Remix) ft. Justin Bieber.

Despacito stays at #1 for a sixth consecutive week on the ARIA Singles Chart. Meanwhile, Bieber features continue to pay off for lead artists with the Canadian star holding two of the Top 5 positions on the chart in what the TMN office has dubbed the Strategic Bieber.

Deeper in the Top 10, Miley Cyrus’ MalibuLiam Payne’s Strip That Down and David Guetta’s 2U ft. Justin Bieber all hit new peaks, the latter making a considerable jump from #22 to #6. Guetta’s last Top 10 single was way back in December 2015 when he teamed up with Sia and Fetty Wap on Bang My Head.
