Those Two Girls quit Hit early breakfast for new daily podcast

Staff Writer

The Hit Network’s early breakfast radio hosts, Lise Carlaw and Sarah Wills, have announced their plans to quit radio in lieu of a daily podcast.

The new show, Halfternoons with Those Two Girls, will remain with Southern Cross Austereo on its new audio app, LiSTNR, and begins on May 31.

Their last show on SCA’s Hit Network was on May 7.

Radio Today understands there are no imminent plans to replace the pair on the Hit Network, with each station instead opting for music and ‘best bits’ from its local Breakfast shows.

Head of Hit Network, Gemma Fordham, said she and her team have worked closely with the duo since 2017 to “help their natural broadcasting talents sharpen and flourish”.

“They have gone from strength to strength and have carved out an audience of Australian women who connect to their candour and authenticity,” Fordham said. “They have been standout performers for us digitally and I’m so pleased we have them joining the LiSTNR offering.”

As part of the new deal, Carlaw and Wills popular podcast Forty has also been “acquired” by SCA. It has achieved more than 200,000 downloads and a 185% increase in listenership during the March quarter, according to a statement from SCA.

Episodes of Halfternoons will be 30-minutes each and released at 2pm AESTB on weekdays, with Carlaw and Wills helping listeners “power through the mid-afternoon” with relatable stories.

“The freedom, play and potential in the podcast space has excited us for some time and to work with the LiSTNR team developing a daily podcast right in time for those who need a little arvo pick-me-up, is where we want to be,” Wills said.

Lise added: “The beauty of Halfternoons is people can listen to the 2pm drop, but it will absolutely still be relevant for folks on their evening commute home, or on the 5am trip to the gym the following morning; the aim is to keep our listeners company, whatever they’re doing.”

Didn’t they already do a daily podcast called, “The Sugar” with SCA?
What happened to that?

Gemma on the money again. “They have gone from strength to strength” like a failed Gold Coast breakfast show, to a 1 hour middawn gig to a podcast. Just really progressing. But hey, what would I know? Their downloads according to the numbers I just made up are up 10065848334% so they are killing it.

Hope these two get a gig in future doing Hit Drive. They are better than Carrie and Tommy. Funny, relateable, real people having a go.

    Hi Kenny,

To the best of my knowledge, Gemma and Ben are not related.

    Thanks,
