Tell us about your background...

I first began in radio back in the late 1980’s as a co-host of a football club program called Tiger Talk it was on 3CS on Thursday nights during the footy season, it was a 15 minute show. During the 1990’s the show morphed into a three hour football show running from 7pm to 10pm and we covered Geelong and the Sth West Victoria Football Leagues.

When the AFL Footy Show came on the scene it was decided that we would be better off going to a Saturday Morning time slot so in the early 2000’s “Sports Saturday” was established. My first role on that show was a part time one, in 2007 I took over the show as co-host. Originally the show only went for the football season but from 2009 we extended it through the summer as well.

During that time I have also been involved in calling football live on community radio and we also called two local grand finals on 3CS.

What’s the best part of your job ?

Definitely the people involved in the show, we have heaps of fun and of course promoting local sport. We have been fortunate enough to have an array of guests from World Champions and AFL Stars through to silly old buggers who play over 60’s cricket. They're all interesting in their own way, but there is nothing better than our show following and supporting a young local sportsperson excelling in their respective sports.

What are your key achievements over the past 12 months ?

Probably the ACRA nomination and the fact that the show still remains very popular with our audience, both young and old. Complaints I believe are always a good gauge as to how we are going and in the past twelve months we have had our fair share, so to me that means we are still as popular as ever.

You can’t make a speech on the night so here’s a chance to have your moment in the spotlight (don’t forget to thank anyone)….go for it….

I would like to thank the entire team at 3CS and MIXX FM we have a great team made up of people who are very supportive. In particular I would like to thank my co-host and current GM Nick Hay, whose abrupt and abrasive on air nature makes me look all the better.

We have a great number of people who give their time to contribute to the show, whether it be winter or summer sports we can always rely on those contributors to come in and they make our job all the easier.

To former General Manager Cathy Jubb for her support to give us the licence to expand the show over the summer period was appreciated, Cathy and current GM Nick Hay remains very supportive of local sport and the community appreciate the coverage that 3CS provides.

Thanks to the ACE network, whilst the network is made up of many stations it does feel like one big family and that is evident whenever we get together to celebrate the great work that they do throughout the various communities.

Thanks again to everyone who puts the effort into making our little show, Sports Saturday great fun.

MADELEINE HUBBARD

BEST PROMOTIONS DIRECTOR (M)
Nova, Perth WA, dmg radio australia

Give us a snapshot of your radio background

I started as a Casanova (street team member) when Nova 93.7 first launched ten years ago, while also studying Broadcasting at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts. After two years of uni during the day, and cruising the streets of Perth in rainbow coloured Ambulance at night and on the weekends, I moved to Thredbo to become a snow reporter. As a Perth girl who had never seen snow, I had to learn to ski fast and get my snow lingo up to speed so I could inform the east coasters all about the “fresh pow pow”, “sweet rides” and “windblown stashes” on Snow FM, 2XL Snowy Mountains, Sports Tonight, Ten News and various other regional and metro media. Being paid to ski was definitely one of the better jobs I’ve had!

After two seasons in Thredbo I returned to Perth as a casual announcer on Nova 93.7, while also helping out part time in the Promotions Department. It was then that I developed a love of organised chaos, brainstorming, comp sheets and T&C’s (yes, even the T&C’s!) so when an opportunity to join the promotions team full time became available I jumped at the chance.

I also spent some time in the sales department as the Client Marketing Manager, developing proactive ideas for clients and responding to briefs. I was also regularly called into the production booths to lend my voice to the latest promo or sponsorship credits.

Following this I took a job with Foxtel in Melbourne (111Hits and The Comedy Channel) where I worked alongside the Marketing Manager in developing radio campaigns for their key TV shows. I returned to Nova 93.7 again in 2010 as an Integration Manager,  relieved to be back doing what I enjoyed the most.

In 2011 I was promoted to Integration and Marketing Director and haven’t looked back since – I love it! After trying my hand at a lot of different areas of radio I’ve definitely found my passion.

Tell us about your ACRA's entry…

My ACRA entry basically summed up all the promotions we ran in the last year, highlighting how much we had managed to achieve given Perth (and Adelaide) traditionally have the smallest marketing and promotions budgets. The secret is consistently creating promotions that totally integrate the client, bringing their products to life in a naturally aligned, genuine way, while also meeting the current station objectives and engaging listeners.

Going through the logistics of a promotion with a fine tooth comb before presenting the idea to a client has also been a key to the success of our local promotions.

What’s the best part of your job ?

The parties! Kidding, no, definitely my team. They are all so talented, hard-working and a pleasure to be around, they make my life easy and I love coming to work because of them. Their input is so valuable, and not much gets past all of us combined.

What are your key achievements over the past 12 months ?

Developing and managing a stable, high performing team. They’ve all reached such a great level of expertise and I’m so proud to watch them do their thing with confidence and skill.

Other key achievements are the weeks where everything happens at once – there’s a great sense of achievement when you look back at the week and realise you and your team have held a listener party, had a 5:30am start for a breakfast OB, coordinated a 24 hour dance off, participated in a fun run and kicked off the next major promotion on-air.

Oh and being an ACRA finalist would be a key achievement too!

Your speech, if you were able to make one…

Ha ha at the risk of sounding like a broken record – I would firstly like to thank my team. I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for them. I want to thank my General Manager Gary Roberts for being such a great boss and cultivating such an enjoyable work environment. I would also like to thank Tony Thomas, Leanne Glamuzina and all the other DMG IMD’s for being such an amazing support network. We all bounce ideas off each other, and they are always there to listen and help resolve any issues, which really helps us all do our job to the highest standard. And finally my adorable partner who has to put up with me being at so many events after work – he hasn’t minded the trip to Sydney though!

Give us a quick snapshot of your radio background ?

In 2001 I applied for my first Radio gig in Marketing & Promotions. The GM called me in to tell me I was unsuccessful, however he had a Sales Managers role he thought “I would be good at”. Thanks “Tony O” – I’ve never looked back!
