Radio Today

Who is the Greatest Programmer in Australia in 2012?

Brad March & Scott Muller outline who and why.

Think inside the box. Brilliant basics and exceptional execution.

For practical, actionable points you can apply today to increase audience, monitor this station and its shows, and adapt everything you can to your own.

Being a media professional means being a career-long professional student of standout programming content, exceptional execution, and strategy. There are some excellent radio stations, programmers, and talent across Australia and internationally.

This article is not about them.

When you’re in radio it’s hard not to be radio-obsessed. Yet there’s much to be learned from beyond radio - cinema, television, online, and digital - all provide great examples, innovations, and minds to learn from.

And when we look for lessons from other media in Australia, right now this one is the monster.

Here are 10 reasons why they’re the best in Australia.

1) It’s about The Audience. It’s never about them.

2) It’s about Attention to Detail.

3) It’s about Reset! Reset! Reset!

4) It’s about Recycling.

5) It’s about Truly Outstanding Creative.

6) It’s about Brilliant Talent.

7) It’s about Promoting the Hell Out of It.

8) It’s about Clear Character Definition – In An Instant!

9) It’s about Success Breeding Success.

10) It’s about The Long Term.

Monitor this station carefully, take action points, and – most importantly – actually do them. Your station will be noticeably better. Immediately. Your ratings will go up. No question.

Mark Sales (6:03am 26 Mar 2012)
And yet my household watches nothing - nadda, nil, zippo - on Channel 7.

Go figure...
Scott Muller (7:24am 26 Mar 2012)
Like it says, Mark - being #1 doesn't mean that over 90% of the population isn't watching or listening (see first point - it's all about the audience)
Anonymous (9:59am 26 Mar 2012)
Exactly. No one in my friendship group outside of work listens to 2Day, but it's still the solid number one FM leader. 'One person surveys' are dangerous.
Scott Muller (6:07am 27 Mar 2012)
Thanks for all the emails and linkedin messages, particularly from within the Seven Network. Without giving away identities, these lines summarise that combined feedback...

"Loved it - spot on. You picked up many key things that make Seven different. It's all about planning. And attention to detail. And creating stronger ideas than competitors. And Planning, planning, planning!"

Seems Seven does a lot planning.
Scott Muller (12:44pm 28 Mar 2012)
Since we posted this, Seven's MKR Grand Final took 2.8 million viewers, all of the night's top 6 shows were on Seven, and they won the top 4 spots in all major demos. No small feat. Hats off to 'em (again).
Sean Craig Murphy (12:03am 30 Mar 2012)
Seriously brilliant article.
Scott Muller (8:32am 30 Mar 2012)
Thanks, Sean - appreciate the feedback.
keith fowler (4:16pm 30 Mar 2012)
Scott and Sean..the beginnings of a bromance or promance :-)
