Murdoch vs Fairfax

Staff Writer

Lachlan Murdoch, the now 100% owner of dmg radio australia, is suing Fairfax Media for defamation.

'The Australian' reported today that a column in 'The Sydney Morning Herald' and 'The Age' claimed he was using News Corp's private jet while Channel Ten struggled.

The column said, in part…

"Son Lachlan has also been flying high, in direct contradiction to the ratings of the Ten Network, where he also is a director."

The information was sourced from News Corp's annual report which referred only to his brother James' use of the jet. Lachlan apparently hasn't used it for 7 years.

In a statement to the courts, Murdoch's Lawyers said….

"The error is not such that a journalist, no matter how incompetent, could have made. Thus, it will be inferred that the defendant chose deliberately to state that it was Lachlan Murdoch, rather than his brother, knowing that statement was false or recklessly in regard thereto."

This is the apology that was published earlier in the week…

"Thursday's CBD column incorrectly said that Lachlan Murdoch used the News Corp corporate jet extensively in the past 12 months…The Herald apologises to Mr Murdoch for the error and for the suggestion that he used his position as a director of News Corp for his personal benefit."

Lachlan Murdoch is seeking a full apology and $50,000 in damages which he plans to donate to charity.
