2UE, 3AW & Triple M move into cricket

Staff Writer

After 80 years of exclusivity, the ABC is no longer the only radio brand to broadcast Test cricket in Australia.

Starting with this summer's Ashes, 2UE and 3AW will commentate the Test cricket, whilst Triple M has obtained the rights to call the Twenty20 Big Bash League matches.

It is believed that the 2UE & 3AW coverage will be a commentary of the matches, whilst Triple M's will be reflecting the Big Bash, but not commentating.

Triple M's Mike Fitzpatrick said;

"We’re locking down our on air team who will broadcast an entertaining ‘rock n roll cricket’ style show from the boundary, with interviews, fun and colour from the games – but it won’t be a ball by ball commentary."

Cricket as arguably the most traditional of all games, is the last major sporting code to offer commercial AM, FM and ABC rights for it's product.

The ABC has retained the rights to call Test cricket and limited overs matches, however has lost the rights for the Big Bash League and the Sheffield Shield.
