Holleran discusses Kyle with staff

Southern Cross Austereo CEO Rhys Holleran has held an all staff meeting at 2Day FM in Sydney to discuss the Kyle Sandilands incident.

Holleran told attendees that he understands the issue has "put a lot of pressure on staff (and) taken a toll", he went on to say that what Sandilands said was wrong.

The meeting was one at which all staff were requested to attend, however both Kyle and Jackie O were absent.

This week Southern Cross Austereo made a presentation at the UBS Emerging Companies Conference in which they said "The Kyle Sandilands on-air incident has had a minor effect on revenues in H1 and is expected to be immaterial in H2".

I hate meetings but this is one that I'd have paid to attend, just to hear that this scumbag employee is putting pressure on every other decent employee, and I'd have suggested they SACK the creep and let us all get on with doing our jobs!!!!
Anonymous (8:28am 08 Apr 2012)
The only one not paying for Kyles disgraceful behaviour, is Kyle himself. I wish they would just sack him!
Tony (9:57am 08 Apr 2012)
Can't sack him while he makes truckloads of money for the station. Management too scared. He's got a licence to do whatever the hell he wants. I remember in the late 90's being told "Don't take on the breakfast show, you'll lose". I did, and......I did.

Interestingly, before I went, the breaky show had their annual leave and I put the night jock in their place. First week I got calls saying get him off, 2nd week on, it was don't let the breaky show come back, this guy is terrific! Would have been a "blip on the radar" getting rid of the morons but management too scared and got rid of the PD instead.
Claire B (11:36am 08 Apr 2012)
Why isn't jackie o just as much to blame in all of this stuff? I heard the rant on the female writer which was disgusting but jackie o just giggled along supporting kyle. I cant stand kyle but was so disappointed she did nothing at the time
Anonymous (11:50am 08 Apr 2012)
What an absolutely appalling situation - the person responsible for causing stress and chaos who should be hauled over the coals is not even present! I feel for all of the SCA staff who have to put up with not only Kyle but a boss like Holleran, who is effectively saying "well, yes, it is wrong what Kyle said but we're not going to make him responsible for the station losing revenue or the stress that other staff have had to put up with". Just pathetic! Kyle and Holleran should both be given the boot!
Anonymous (12:20pm 08 Apr 2012)
Shortly after the lie-detector incident, someone spray-painted the word "SCUM" on the footpath right outside the door into SCA Melbourne. Even after having been painted over, it's unmissable and unmistakable.
I know it's not SCA's property, but being concerned about the toll Sandilands' behaviour has on other staff, I think it would make a positive difference if they could see about getting it removed properly.

This is really sad watching the once great 2dayFM decaying.
All because of two people who think they are invincible and surround themselves with yes people.
Do they even care about the damage they have done to other hard working people in their organisation?
If they had a conscience they'd resign now and let the station rebuild.
CB (5:10pm 08 Apr 2012)
Kyle is a King and has more talent than many on the radio now and in years gone by. In any era Kyle would stand alone and any criticism is more than likely just jealousy
Anonymous (6:05pm 08 Apr 2012)
For the next 5 years, 24/7 hours a day this network is under the spotlight, all because of one vile man and his blatant disregard for common decency and respect for others.

Keep him there and people will be watching and waiting for someone, anyone to slip up. Wont matter if it is Kyle or someone else.

Get rid of him and the pressure is off.

Austereo have handled this whole situation poorly, hope at some point they take matters into their own hands - disregard Kyle's threats to 'burn em all' and just get rid of him.

Otherwise it will happen - the complaints will start arriving on ACMA's doorstep and matters will be out of their hands. Just saying...
Chook (6:30pm 08 Apr 2012)
Here's an idea; why not get the Kyle morning crew to do a campaign of random of acts of kindness? Isn't that the tried and true strategy for 'softening' an act considered a bit harsh?? Just staggering the whole thing.
Dave (6:30pm 08 Apr 2012)
CB
Are u serious?
Jealous of Sandilands and his gutter mouth?
The man is just about finished
Rex (5:37am 09 Apr 2012)
And your web site reckons vile Kyle is the number 1 talent of all time? What nonsense. No other 'personality' has put their employees and staff through this. Radio Today it's time to admit you were wrong! (bet you don't allow this comment through)
Jules (11:09am 09 Apr 2012)
rex ur being a bit harsh the list was the opinion of one person and even the reader voted list put him at number two or three, I'm not defending kyle he has done some stupid stuff but he is a clever broadcaster.
Milsey (8:40pm 09 Apr 2012)
There's no place for opinion in Oz radio. Keep to the facts. Better to have vanilla than anything colorful that could damage revenue or cost jobs. We all should be cognisant of that.

A few months ago, I was talking with someone positioned at a 'higher' level in radio. They seemed very convinced that Australian radio was taking a serious turn for the worse in regard to 'entertainment value'.. I assumed this statement to be an attack regarding the trials and tribulations pouring out at 2DAY. But no, it was directly aimed at the tall poppy cutters. The people that want to rip down those who offend their senses. People who believe they are 'making a difference' and speaking up for the little guy. Is it envy? Or, perhaps a simple case of their version of how the industry should be. Regardless, there is obviously a lack or originality and 'against the grain' performers in Australia, because if there were more, 2DAY would not be the only station feeling the heat. Argue as you will, the push from the 'do-gooders' is for a 'cookie cutter' industry. Their version on how it should be. And believe it, that is exactly what you're all going to get.

Does no one remember the hate for Laws in his height? How he had to employ security and lawyers? Reverend Mulray was superb at offending the senses; a particular AIDS TV commercial while ten pin bowling is one instance that comes to mind, all ripped off the air within a very short period of being released. Yes, the world has changed, and yes, you are accountable for your actions. However, regardless of what happens to Sandilands, or 2DAY for that matter, by the time all the soap boxers have their say - the industry as you know it, will have changed. Because nothing will save an industry once it evolves into 'safe mode.' And that's exactly where it's headed.

You're eating each other up. Be careful what you wish for.
Chester (8:47am 10 Apr 2012)
Well said anonymous, completely agree. The authors of a lot of the comments on this site about Kyle wouldn't know compelling content if it poked them in the eye. There's a reason K&J are number one, that 2Day FM is number one, and have been for a long time.

The negators are probably working at radio stations that lose, survey after survey after survey...
Bianca Dye (12:53pm 10 Apr 2012)
I just wanna say...that I AM STOKED we finally have a REAL RADIO FORUM full of actual radio people who get & KNOW the biz & we are all debating this - anything - it reminds me why i love radio & why we are all so passionate about it & I say - keep it all coming - your views anon or not are fascinating to read ... :)

Nothin but hits for the workday! That is all.
Knuckles (4:21pm 10 Apr 2012)
If I was in charge of a station with Kyle I'd have the 'come to Jesus' chat with him. Give him the tools sure, but give him a scare now and again to let him know whose boss. Management these days can be way too soft
Guy Ashford (5:56pm 13 Apr 2012)
Jesus the hair on the back of my neck still goes straight when I see Knuckles name mentioned.Hopefully not the same Knuckles I knew !
Knuckles (8:36pm 13 Apr 2012)
Guy I am THAT Knuckles yes! ....I remember you as having some talent but not as much as me though. I rule by fear and manage by playing one against another. My wife has a fair influence as does my sister. Do as I say or look out!!
Sally Thomson (8:18am 14 Apr 2012)
Holleran obviously doesn't get the community's anger over Sandilands behaviour, to continue talking about profits is ridiculous, the issue is about people and the effect Sandilands has had on us. His staff wouldn't be under pressure if immediate action been taken to Sandilands the FIRST time he stepped out of line.

Most of the community work in jobs where is we behave inappropriately it is taken very seriously by our employers. We have policies at my work to eliminate harassment & bullying, perhaps the media should join the real world and get some solid policies under their belt.

Incidentally, CB, you mustn't be old enough to remember Doug Mulray, he had talent. Not like this American style franchised hate/"roast" crap that passes for entertainment nowadays on tv & radio.
