Official: KIIS 1065 Sydney

The Australian Radio Network has confirmed today that Mix 106.5 will be rebranded as KIIS 106.5 on 20 January 2014, the first day that Kyle and Jackie O will host Breakfast on the station.

Group Content Director Duncan Campbell has said; “We’re building a station specifically for Sydney that will be energetic, cheeky, fun, and reflect the best that Sydney has to offer.”

ARN’s Chief Executive Ciaran Davis commented;

“Just as Kyle & Jackie O have made the change to KIIS 1065, we’re confident that the listeners and advertisers of Sydney will make this bold move with them, while the fans of Mix will enjoy this fresh new change.

The addition of KIIS 1065 dramatically strengthens the network. It augments the overall scope of our listeners. We’ll still be reaching our same core demographic but also broadening the audience overall”.

Davis has told News Limited overnight that he wants top spot in Sydney; "We want the one and two FM positions as quickly as we can".

ARN has also revealed that the Kyle & Jackie O show will be repackaged into a one-hour show to run on Mix Melbourne, 97.3 Brisbane, and Mix Adelaide each weeknight from 6pm.

Davis said; “This means not only will Kyle & Jackie O be reaching a wide audience, ARN will now have the potential to truly dominate the 25–54 demographic across the KIIS, MixFM and Classic Hits brands”

Even more expensive when the clients who refused to advertise on SCA because of K&J avoid ARN like the plague. Not to mention the clients that are on Mix in the first place because they refuse to advertise on 2Day.

All the logo needs is light green/turquoise and the three colours of the original Mix 106.5 logo would've been reunited.

The logo is fine, does not fall into any current design trend that leaves it among the pack.

As for this mythical argument of clients refusing to advertise due to K&J, consider the current rating share differential. Mix and 2DAY are worlds apart, the Mix spots would be going for a song, there is no connection. No client or media buyer in their right mind would choose the current Mix over 2DAY with yawning gap in audience numbers. If the breakfast shares were even roughly even pegging, you might agree with that thought, but they're not, so it's wrong.

Those who think that Kyle and Jackie will be the saviours for Kiis ie. Mix would be well advised to think again.

In Survey 7 in the Sydney market, (survey 8 is out this week) 2 Day had scored 9.9% with Kyle and Jackie having 11.2%. Mix on the other hand has what should be a worrying set of figures of 5.6% with a figure at breakfast of 4.2%.

For Kyle and Jackie to be any kind of success at Kiis their audience would have to increase significantly and that the other (Brisbane, Melbourne and Adelaide) markets would also have to be responsive.

Will it work out? My tip is that its most likely to end in tears and the excerise will be highly costly at best.

What does the word KIIS mean to Sydney? Bugger all. You can sizzle this shit all you want, the only winner out of ARN trying to destroy Austereo will be Nova. Kyle and Jackie O on 973 and Mix Adelaide? Brand destruction for the sake of King Kyle's ego. Expect KIIS no higher than #3 overall by end if the year.

If you're building a station specifically for Sydney as you say you are.. why use an imported brand name in the market you're broadcasting to. K I I S means nothing to Sydney. I don't think the logo says cheeky or fun either. I'm struggling to believe this was well planned out. $$$ $$$

KIIS may stand for zip in Sydney at the moment, but GOLD meant nothing in Melbourne when KZFM first changed, too. Didn't take long to gain traction, As for whether the whole exercise will pay off in the long term remains to be seen, but that is a wider issue than a mere name.

come on guys ...give ARN a break ...its a bold move and will generate loads of competitive excitement, which is what the business is all about. I have no doubt that it will bring success, the pressure will be on because of overall cost structure ...so it needs to be at the top of the market, which ARN have made no secret of wanting. They'll be struggling to get 5 or 6 percent, and the media will have fun in reporting the failure.
After all, these two have made a lot of enemies over the years.
