triple j launch Double J

Staff Writer

After six months of audience and industry consultation, triple j and the ABC have revealed that Dig Music will become Double J – a name that is a throwback to the early days of jjj when it was 2JJ (Double Jay) in the 70s.

Double J will play new music and iconic music that older triple j fans grew up with. They will also tap into nearly 40 years of interviews and sound archives.

Former triple j presenter Myf Warhurst (pic below) will launch the station on Wednesday April 30 and will present a program that will air from 11am – 3pm weekdays.

The announcement was made on triple j breakfast this morning with Myf saying:

"It's going to be a whole lot of new music and a lot of stuff from the archives as well. It's for people who love music, and also love a bit of music history. I'm really excited!"

At the launch OB, which will air on Double J and triple j at the same time, Myf will reveal all programs, presenters and more.

triple j Manager Chris Scaddan says:

"We have wanted to build a station like this for a number of years and now, with your help, we are really proud to deliver Double J. While it won't be a throwback to the music of the original Double J, it will be a station that takes the best elements of triple j's past – a name, a presenter and the incredible archives, thrown headlong into the future with the best new sounds around. It means even more airplay for Australian music and more of the values and ethos that make triple j so celebrated around the world."

ABC Director of Radio Kate Dundas says:

"One of the best things any of us working in the media can do is to deliver something that audiences genuinely want. I am truly proud that the entry of Double J into the market comes following an extensive public engagement campaign. We recognise people want to stay connected to music and discover new artists as they go through life – that’s the simple aim of Double J. This new ABC service has been built on the views of people who love music, along with the expertise triple j brings to making great radio and amazing digital content for its audiences".
