Survey 2 : 3AW lose top spot / KIIS #2 overall

Staff Writer

The results from the second metro survey of 2014 have been released. The big news comes from Melbourne this time around with 3AW moving to 2nd in the market behind ABC774. Gold 104.3 also move to #1 FM to help ARN capture the #1 FM position in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide.

In Sydney, Kyle & Jackie O have moved ahead of WSFM duo Jonesy & Amanda to be the outright #1 FM breakfast show. KIIS 1065 also move to #2 in the market behind 2GB.

Below we'll look at the results in more detail by market:

SYDNEY

All eyes in Sydney were on the FM band. Would KIIS continue to grow, and have 2Day bottomed out. As much as one survey can tell us, both of those things have happened.

ARN

  • KIIS have developed a classic 'mother/daughter' profile that Hot AC formats often have. They have big teen figures, a dip 18-24, big 25-39's and are competitive 40-54. Classic mother/daughter. The station is a clear #1 25-39, and a clear #1 in Breakfast.
  • WSFM has slipped back into 3rd FM ranking: Breakfast took a tumble falling over a point, yet claiming 2nd place overall just ahead of Nova.
  • Rosso's drive show + Kyle & Jackie O 6p-7p best of show claimed #1FM on 10.5%. They are 0.1 in front of Nova and 0.1 behind 2GB. Rosso's 4p-6p shift is also #1 FM on 10.9%, 0.7 in front of Nova.

Nova Entertainment

  • Nova improved slightly to a 7.8, driven by 18-39 and good workday diaries.
  • Smooth fell slightly, however remained well ahead of 2Day and 2MMM, and Smooth is developing into a clear workday play.

SCA

  • They expected a tough result again, and that has come. Clearly SCA won't be pleased with a 4.0 share for 2Day overall, however they will be pleased that they appear to have bottomed out and will look to build from that position. Encouragingly for 2DAY, growth came 18-39 and in Breakfast, however the numbers are small.
  • Triple M was flat overall with workday improvement offset by a fall in drive.
  • SCA are the bottom ranked FM stations in Sydney with 2Day in 6th place, and Triple M 5th.

Macquarie

  • Another strong result for 2GB, who have moved back over a 13 share overall, with Jones and Hadley monstering the market. They achieved the unusual double-whammy of improving 40-54 and also 55-64, traditionally a difficult thing to do. 2GB are now not far off #1 40-54.
  • 2CH fell, with declines in all dayparts, however the 55+ figures remain solid and they won't be too concerned with this result.

Fairfax

  • This will be a tough pill to swallow. 2UE is at record lows almost everywhere you look. Breakfast was flat, however mornings, afternoons and drive are all in the 2 share range, the lowest they have ever been. The weakest dayparts were Mornings and Afternoons which shed a third of their audience in this survey.

ABC

  • Pretty decent result for the ABC, triple j improved a little, and remain ahead of both SCA stations; a big 18-24 result for triple j.
  • 702 was basically flat across the board.

MELBOURNE

ARN

  • ARN are one of the big winners in Melbourne today with both stations recording good results. Gold FM has moved into #1 FM position overall on an 8.8% share, and a dominant 40-54 position. The Gold result is driven heavily by workday listening, and despite being #1 overall, Breakfast is ranked 5th FM, so it is an exceptional result given the soft lead-in.
  • Mix has also done well, recording its highest share in some years; although the growth was largely out of the demo, with 25-39's declining. Still, they would be very pleased with the result which saw the station leapfrog MMM overall.

Nova Entertainment

  • A mixed result for NE today, with Nova falling slightly, although they have done a Steven Bradbury and jumped ahead of Fox in the process. Nova is clearly winning 18-39, and will be intending to have a crack at #1 overall shortly.
  • Meshel & Tommy are =#1FM breakfast with Triple M's Hot Breakfast on 7.4%
  • Smooth was up marginally, all driven 40-54, and aside from evenings, all dayparts improved. As in Sydney, Smooth is a clear workday play.

SCA

  • With plenty of work to do in Sydney, the last thing SCA needed was problems in Melbourne, however both Fox and Triple M have had a down result.
  • Fox fell by 1.2, to slip behind Nova (just) and be half a point in front of Mix overall. The station declined in all demos and all dayparts to record a figure that would be their lowest in years.
  • Triple M only fell by 0.4%, but that was enough to put them in last place of the commercial FM stations (10+). This is less reflective of Triple M's performance, and more of the tightness in the Melbourne market. The difference between first and last FM in Melbourne is 2.4%, and the difference between second and last FM is just 1.1%.

Fairfax

  • 3AW has been the rock of Fairfax for years, and whilst it would be a brave call to suggest they are faltering, Fairfax won't be pleased to be knocked off the #1 spot overall today. ABC 774 has snuck ahead by 0.4% to take the overall #1 position. In a rare bad survey, 3AW fell in nearly every demo, and in nearly every daypart. That said, we don't think they'll be too concerned.
  • 3AW's Ross and John (right) also celebrate their 98th consecutive survey win.
  • Magic was flat. Up in some areas, down in others, but overall a good consistent result.

Pacific Star

  • With the start of the footy season, you'd expect SEN to pick up and it has. Good improvements across the board, and an improving 40-54 result particularly will be good news on Swan Street. Now they just need to get MP back in the ratings and they might have a duopoly story to take to market.

ABC

  • Along with ARN, the ABC was the other big winner in Melbourne, with 774 taking the #1 spot overall on 11.7%. Improvements across the board, and a big jump 55+ drove the result, and they will be very pleased to knock off the big dog 3AW.
  • triple j fell in Melbourne, and suffered hits everywhere in what was a poor result for the station.

BRISBANE

ARN

  • 97.3 have held onto the #1 position overall, but they did it by the skin of their teeth, falling by nearly a point to be just ahead of Nova. All dayparts down, and most demos; they were probably saved from being #2 by a movement up 18-24's which kept Nova at bay.
  • 4KQ was basically flat, in what was a consistent, if non-eventful result for them.

Nova Entertainment

  • Nova 106.9 improved to a 12.4%, and second place, driven by an out of demo improvement 40-54, and a big jump in Breakfast (right) with Ash, Kip & Luttsy moving to the #1 position overall.

SCA

  • A mixed result for SCA in Brisbane. They will be pleased to see signs of a resurgent B105 which, whilst still 2 points off the leaders, has moved up to a 10.5% share and will be starting to think about the 11's and 12's. For B105, the improvement was all in demo with 18-39 increasing.
  • Triple M however fell back, seeing declines under 40, and taking a sizeable hit in all dayparts. The workday was particularly badly impacted, and as a male-skewed station that is clearly unhelpful.

Fairfax

  • After a less than desirable result in Melbourne, and another disaster in Sydney, Fairfax will be pleased with the figures delivered by 4BC today. 4BC has improved nearly a point; all 40+ and spread across all dayparts. They will be particularly pleased with breakfast, which improved to an 8.0%.
  • Magic (the old 4BH) fell back slightly in what was a pretty flat result for the station.

ABC

  • ABC612 improved slightly, with workday growth leading the way. 612 is on a 9.3% overall, in 4th place overall.
  • triple j fell back to be the equal last ranked FM (along with Triple M); and took hits in almost all demos and dayparts. Not the best of result for triple j in Brisbane.

ADELAIDE

ARN

  • Adelaide really does belong to ARN today, an excellent result for both of their stations.
  • Mix 102.3 has improved 1.7% to be a dominant #1 station, 3 points ahead of the 2nd ranked FIVEaa. Mix convincingly wins Breakfast, Mornings and Afternoons and is #1 40-54 by the length of Glenelg beach.
  • Cruise has had a great result, the 'little AM station that could' is now ahead of both SAFM and Triple M overall, and is ranked in 4th place overall. Not bad. They also sit #2 FM in mornings.

SCA

  • Adelaide has been a challenging market for SCA for some time now and that continues today.
  • There are some signs at Triple M of growth, improving by half a point, with the growth being driven 40+, and from drive. However they won't be pleased to remain in 5th place 25-39, to be competitive, they will want improvement there. Triple M is ranked last of the commercial stations.
  • SAFM is really going through one of those tough times at the moment. The station has fallen again to a 7.6% and it is difficult to grow overall when Breakfast is struggling to get out of the 6's. The show deserves more than that, however it is taking a long time to get any traction.

Nova Entertainment

  • Pretty good result in Adelaide for NE, Nova 91.9 improved again to be equal 3rd overall, and the dominant station under 40.
  • With the footy season underway, it was probably unexpected that FIVEaa would fall, and it took a hit in every daypart, aside from the footy focused drive show which improved slightly. Nevertheless, FIVEaa remains in 2nd spot overall and would be pleased to have snuck ahead of ABC891.

ABC

  • Ouch. ABC891 was hit hard in this book, with nearly 2 points shaved off the overall figures, and this meant the station fell behind FIVEaa. Falls in every demo probably showing the post-election blues for the station. The do keep the #1 breakfast position overall, with Matthew Abraham and David Bevan (right) nearly 2 points clear of Mix.
  • triple j improved slightly and is on 6.7% overall; more importantly it is nearly #1 25-39 following a massive jump in that demo, so not a bad result for the J's.

PERTH

SCA

  • Mix 94.5 might have declined a little, but they remain a clear #1 station in Perth and a strong performer across the board. At 14.4%, even with a fall, they'll be pretty pleased.
  • The relaunch of 92.9 is yet to pay dividends with the station sliding back marginally. The station wins teens, but will be disappointed to slip 18-24's, and in Breakfast. Still, early days.

Nova Entertainment

  • Nova fell slightly, although remain pretty solid across the board. A pretty non-eventful, yet consistent result for Nova.

Fairfax

  • 96FM has fallen back by over a point in this book, with the declines all in target, and across all dayparts. The workday was particularly badly hit.
  • 6PR has done very well, improving by 1.6% to a 7.6 share and seeing improvements in all dayparts. Whilst Fairfax won't be too happy about 96 falling, they'll be pleased with the signs at 6PR.

Capital Radio

  • 6IX is the lowest ranked commercial station in Perth; that said, it is also the one likely to have the lowest cost base, so it can still be profitable from a lower share. However, nearly a point down, and in decline in all dayparts and nearly all demos won't be a great result for them.

ABC

  • triple j is the clear #1 station 18-39 in Perth, and it is also now the 2nd ranked station overall. An exceptional result and one that a number of the Perth commercial FM's would be envious of.
  • ABC720 has had a largely flat result, with a very respectable 11.1% overall, this is driven by the very strong Breakfast performance which, as usual, dominates the market recording a 15.6% share; a clear #1.
