Smith axed from 2GB

Staff Writer

Michael Smith has been dropped from 2GB over comments made this week on the Ben Fordham drive show.

The comments were made during a discussion on the Festival of Dangerous Ideas and the controversy surrounding the proposed presentation titled "Honour Killings are Justified".

During the conversation Smith referred to the prophet Mohammed as a paedophile;

"the prophet Mohammed was a paedophile……a man who promoted the idea that it was OK to marry a six-year-old and consummate the marriage when the little girl was nine…..how can we tolerate Islamism as an idealogy and give it any kind of breathing space"

Smith was subsequently contacted by 2GB Program Director David Kidd who advised him that he was not required on the station any further, with Smith claiming that Kidd said "We won't be needing you, you can't call a deity a paedophile".

Following the remarks, Drive host Ben Fordham apologised to listeners on the air, and Ray Hadley criticised Smith on his show, distancing himself from the comments.

Smith has written on his website:

"I've thought about what I said in answer to Ben's question.   I think it's wrong for a man in his 50s to have sex with a 9 year old child.   It is wrong, it's a crime and it should be called out for what it is.

I know Ray Hadley disagrees with me – perhaps Ray could let us know what part of a grown man having sex with a 9 year old girl is right?"
