Townsville’s New Star

Staff Writer

Grant Broadcasters have rebranded 106.3 Townsville to relaunch as Star 106.3. The launch this morning follows on from the same moves in Cairns and Mackay.

For the family owned Grant Broadcasters, it also signifies a new chapter for the Townsville stations with the relocation to new premises in Sturt Street, which is currently under construction and fit-out. Chief Operating Officer Alison Cameron is excited about the future of the brand.

106.3 has always performed well for us, and while the format remains similar, its brilliant timing to breathe some new life into the station. Star is a fun and vibrant brand and we look forward to showing it off in Townsville,”she says.

“We’re focussed on structuring the resources of each station to be managed independently by each market, which creates rare new on and off air employment opportunities in regional radio,”Ms Cameron adds.

The switch to Star has also seen a reshuffle of the on air line-up, with Breakfast announcer Cliff Kern (‘CK’) moving to Drive and new duo Danny Lakey and Alana McLean taking on Breakfast.

Lakey and Larnz have come from Western Australia where they’ve both worked separately at Hit 929 Perth, Star 106.3 Content Director, Jason Wolfgram says:

“Lakey and Larnz have great chemistry. Lakey brings with him a tonne of colourful and quirky stories and loves to stir the pot, but Larnz is witty and can give as good as she gets! I think we’re going to have a lot of fun as we get to know them better,”he says.

Lakey and Larnz and the new Star 106.3 brand started their first day with an outside broadcast from The Rock Pool on Townsville Strand.
