Triple M Classic Rock Digital bites the dust

Staff Writer

Despite strong ratings, albeit in the low-rating digital spectrum, SCA has announced that it will shut down Triple M Classic Rock Digital in a week.

The announcement reads, in part:

“Our big brother Triple M-FM is now playing much more classic rock than it was when Classic Rock Digital was created. Now, Triple M is playing the best classics, and is about to launch the “Classic Rock Summer”. We ask that you check it out.

We thank you for listening, and while Classic Rock Digital has been a great station that we have loved creating and listening to, we ask you to once again to turn to Triple M”.

Speaking to Mediaweek, SCA’s Guy Dobson confirmed the the move was due to Triple M (FM) being cannibalised by it’s digital brother:

“We found that Classic Rock Digital was eating into the cume audience for Triple M. We will be adding more of that classic rock content to the Triple M music format. Listeners will start to hear more of that gold content across the day.”

So not only is there a fresh digital format in the wings from SCA, but an older, more classic-based Triple M.

So I’m working from home, and want to listen to classic rock – but TripleM isn’t playing classic rock – they are broadcasting more footie games than ever – but I want music, not sport.
