Who could 2DayFM install in Breakfast to rattle KIIS FM?

Former Editor & Content Director

With Southern Cross Austereo (SCA) confirming it will soon move to a talent-led Breakfast show in Sydney, how is FM market-leader KIIS feeling?

Could 2DayFM return to its glory days and finally recover from Kyle & Jackie O defecting to Australian Radio Network (ARN)?

“Well, the short answer is probably no,” said ARN’s content director Duncan Campbell after yesterday’s radio ratings release.

There’s no one, he said, that SCA’s chief content officer Dave Cameron could appoint, who could topple the K&J Show.

“That probably might come across as a bit arrogant,” Campbell conceded, “but I think the strength of Kyle & Jackie O is just phenomenal. I mean, they didn’t lose any share at all over the last six months or since Survey 2. They’re the second-most-listened-to Breakfast show in the country behind 3AW [in Melbourne], and AW’s numbers is a one-off if you like.

“So the strength is there, the content is just incredibly consistent – so the short answer is no, I don’t [worry about it].”

For his part, Cameron is apparently equally as unrattled, and said he is just running his own race, staying away from the rumour mill, and doing things to his own timeline.

“I don’t do rumour mills,” he said. “You should know me by now. I don’t look at them…

“I don’t participate, nor do I look at those rumour mills, nor do I involve myself in them.”

He did concede it had been “an adverse set of results” for SCA across Melbourne and Sydney, but insisted this wouldn’t change his plans.

“At the right time, there’ll be an opportunity to return to the talent-led Breakfast show. That opportunity is not going to raise itself in a conversation with you today. It will probably be first with my staff and our teams, and then we’ll take a step-by-step process to be able to deliver a different product and the right product.”

A number of names have been doing the rounds in recent weeks as potential hosts of the program, but Cameron would not be drawn on any of them.

Kyle and Jackie O?

Forget who or what show, I would be starting by cleaning out the top end management. After so many failed attempts they magically all still keep their jobs. They are all just friends who have worked together for years so keep each other in a job and point the blame elsewhere to stay employed.

As for the talent, just at least make sure they are all in the same room everyday, not on ISDN and skype and live and breathe Sydney. That’s at a start in the right direction even though I think they have been through too many shows to ever get it back no matter who they hire. The glory of 2Day is gone forever, just play now to be somewhat competitive..

What’s happend with that station. To be honest I really enjoyed old “Hits and oldskool’ format (still on Fox Melbourne) and the playlist they playing now…but for everyone else in Sydney 2Day fm is dead…only choice is rebrand to HIT Sydney, get Hamish and Andy for Breakfast…that could work.

KIISFM would be the last station 2Day will go after, they’re not imbeciles. SCA will go after WS and Smooth nothing is surer.

Put “The Briefing” into breakfast.
Do something. Try something.

People are leaving radio but the industry keeps making the same kind of radio shows. The last 27 2DayFM breakfast shows have had different talent but they’ve all done the same show.

@Hkn Fox & 2DAY run the same playlist now I’m pretty sure. Have been for months.

In all my years of following Australian and UK radio, I’ve never known a management team to be given so much time and so many attempts at revitalising a station. Surely the 2Day brand is now toxic and needs killing off? Start from scratch. New name, new format, complete overhaul, rather than forever tinkering around the edges.

@Get it right… I don’t think they have same playlist (Fox and 2day fm). I was listening Fox and 2Day fm. 2day fm nowadays if more AC”easy listening ” with bit of ACR. Maybe they should launch HIT Easy and play against Smooth and WSFM.
