ABC’s Signal ends

The ABC’s Signal podcast will fold next month.

The daily podcast, produced by the national broadcaster’s News Department, has run for 900 episodes and will end on December 10.

The show is presented by Ange Lavoipierre and Stephen Smiley and produced by Chris Dengate (pictured above from Twitter).

Breaking the news on her Twitter account, Lavoipierre said:

Making a daily news podcast for the ABC has always felt like the best journalism job in Australia, and we got to be one of the first of our kind in the country…

Thanks to everyone who’s listened to the pod since its launch, and has had kind words to say. It’s meant so much. Massive applause break please for my co-host

@StephenSmiley, and our producer/engineer @Chris_dengate.  I’m so proud of what we made.”

The Signal was insightful and well researched, with a young feel, but did not do as well as other daily news podcasts such as Schwartz Media’s 7am, SCA’s new venture into news podcasts The Briefing or international podcasts such as NYT’s The Daily. The ABC is not part of the Australian podcast ranker, so we can’t see how The Signal did in relation to other podcasts in that chart, but PodcastInsignts ranked it at #76 and Podtail placed it at #108.

Social media followers of the podcast were disappointed to hear it is ending and sent messages of appreciation to the production team.
