The latest bout of radio news from Hobart will have everyone in Tasmania talking.

Following the departure of Dave Noonan from Triple M Hobart Breakfast, Southern Cross Austereo has confirmed that Brian ‘Spoonman’ Carlton has accepted the gig.

This news comes just two weeks after his sudden exit from Grant Broadcasters.

It’s not the most surprising news to those following a few weeks of upheaval in Tassie radio; not to mention the almost-secret meeting between Carlton and SCA’s local GM, Ally Bradley.

In 2015 Carlton decided to permanently relocate to Tasmania. Since then he has led the Tasmania Talks team to six ACRA wins from 12 nominations.

As a member of the Triple M Network alumni, Carlton’s return to the network is a ‘coming home’.

“Triple M is my spiritual broadcast home and I’m stoked and privileged to be joining Triple M Hobart for breakfast,” said Carlton. “If you like your breakfast radio well stirred, I hope you’ll join me in Hobart. I can’t wait!”

Triple M Hobart was the fourth most listened to station in the lastest Hobart radio ratings, with 14.7% of People 10+. On the all-important Breakfast shift, Carlton has some ground to make, with 7HO FM, ABC Radio and Hit in the lead.

“We are excited to welcome Brian Carlton – the Spoonman to our Hobart team and back to the Triple M family,” Bradley added. “Brian brings a wealth of experience tackling the biggest issues inside and out of Tasmania.”

Carlton’s first show on Triple M Hobart is on November 18.

You sacked the best breakfast radio combination in Dave & Al & are installing this rabbit. Most people in Launceston thought him unbearable, now you are inflicting him on the south. Anyway it doesn’t matter as I and many others have already switched stations. Good luck & see how long it lasts

Great news. Brian was a must listen to in the north and northwest of the State. He is provocative and entertaining not afraid to tackle the issues big and small, and ask the hard questions. He gives Tasmanians a voice.

I actually thought Brian Carlton was a new ray of sunshine to Launceston since he arrived here in 2015 I enjoyed his broad knowledge and his character was a true version of a very informant articulate very experienced radio broadcaster he will be missed by many in the north.

Are you serious MMM????
You axed the Dave Noonan show with Al Plath for this has been sook. Should Marls be worried that he maybe heading to the chopping block as well?
You have already ruined drive home radio by infecting our ears with mainland crap who think they are funny. Not!!!
Like many others, I too wIll no longer have the MMM ringing in my ears.
This is an epic FAIL.

Miss him up on the morning radio show.
A celebrity that I thought of his Calabria would never been seen again in Tasmania. So, it’s fantastic news that he is staying with us. He is a big promoter of getting Tassie and the intelligent Northern listeners Solute him and wish him well..
