Dave ‘Higgo’ Higgins to take over GOLD 104.3 Drive in 2022

Former Editor & Content Director

Dave ‘Higgo’ Higgins will have a permanent on-air gig next year, succeeding Gavin Miller in the Drive slot on Melbourne’s GOLD 104.3.

Last week it was revealed that Miller would not be renewing his contract with ARN, with the radio stalwart saying it felt like the right time to do things differently.

In recent years, Miller’s replacement Higgins has been a casual announcer at both GOLD and SCA’s Triple M Hard N Heavy.

He said his full-time Drive slot at GOLD, kicking off on January 1, 2022, will mean he needs to step away from Triple M.

He said it was a huge honour to get the gig and a real buzz to step back into radio full time.

“I am so excited, and feel proud to be stepping into Gavin Miller’s shoes, and am [going to] try my bloody hardest to keep the great ratings going that he’s built up over the past 10 years.”

Higgins also gave a special shoutout to the GOLD family, who he said had made him feel so welcome and had encouraged him over the past four years.

GOLD 104.3’s content director, Sue Carter, said she’s really excited to announce Higgins as the 2022 Drive host.

“For the past three years, ‘Higgo’ has been one of the standout stars of GOLD 104.3’s Weekend line-up, as well as stepping in to cover Weekday shifts whenever needed,” she said. “Already loved by our audience, he brings with him many years of experience broadcasting to Melbourne, complemented by a deep passion for music.”

In the most recent radio ratings, GOLD was the #1 FM station in  both the Afternoon and Drive slots. Afternoons are measured from 12pm to 4pm, while Drive is 4pm to 7pm. Miller is on air from 3pm to 6pm, and Higgins will take over from January.

In the Afternoon slot, GOLD had 13.7%, actually on par with overall leader, AM’s 3AW.

In Drive, it had 10.4%, making it #1 in FM, but behind 3AW’s 15.3% and the ABC’s 12.6%.

It’s not just arvo’s. Gold104.3 is also No. 1 FM Breakfast with The Christian O’Connell Show, and Mornings with Craig “Huggy” Huggins. In fact they’re Melbourne’s Number 1 FM station.

Higgo is one of the GREAT humans in radio.
His love of music is probably unmatched in radio in Australia.
He’s an excellent story-teller, a great communicator, and just a really decent person with a big heart. This is a super move by Gold. They’re getting an exceptional contributor both on- and off-air.

Extremely well deserved. One if the best, if not the best, radio announcers around. A real down to earth person with the greatest passion for all music, it’s a pleasure to listen to Higgo. Congratulations.
