Is Christian O’Connell going national in 2020?

Former Assistant Editor

After reaching the summit of the FM Breakfast ratings in Melbourne in 2019, The Christian O’Connell show is going national this year.

Taking to Twitter, O’Connell wrote a cryptic tweet about the move, revealing he, Jack Post and Patrina Jones will be heard all around the country.

“Very excited to say that the show very soon will be available all over Australia,” he tweeted.

“Nothing but deep gratitude for this chance I’ve been given here x.”

Radio Today reached out to ARN who declined to confirm and share more details at this time.

The most likely scenario would be a highlights show, broadcast going into other metro markets on either Nights or Weekends.

It’s easy to imagine O’Connell on Gold104.3 sister station WSFM, but whether ARN moves to put the show on 96FM in Perth, 97.3FM in Brisbane and Mix 102.3 in Adelaide remains to be seen.

O’Connell went to the top of the Melbourne ratings in 2019’s seventh GfK ratings book with a 9.1% share of listening, before finishing the year in second on 7.8%, behind Nova 100.

The show had a slow start and ARN national CD Duncan Campbell acknowledged bringing him to Australia was a risk, but there’s no doubt O’Connell has picked up a loyal following since his arrival in mid-2018.

He conquered the UK market on Absolute Radio and formerly Virgin Radio, hosting his Breakfast show from March 2006 to May 2018.

Is it possible ARN launch Gold on a new DAB+ station in each market? They seem to have fewer stations on DAB than SCA, which has a multitude of Hit / TripleM options

Am I missing something? He’s already national! In fact, global. I hear him on the Sonos in my bedroom in Noosa. How about that?

Cut n paste shows seems to be the thing these days, save on announcers on weekends and nights so why Not. Next they will network Boticas Bunch out of WA.

Please spare us this guy going National.
He should be on Smooth. He doesn’t rate, the oldies format rates as it did with the previous team. Bland, boring pommie radio no thanks.

Zero chance of this guy doing well up in Sydney. Don’t be surprised if his Melbourne ratings slide this year too.

CHRISTIAN sadly will be rating 6’s by mid year. Once the marketing tap is turned off just watch.
