Kyle pushes for Breakfast show to be taken national

Former Editor & Content Director

Kyle Sandilands believes his record ratings result for The Kyle & Jackie O Show on Sydney’s KIIS 106.5 earlier this week only furthers the argument that Sydney’s #1 Breakfast show should be syndicated across the country.

“That’s all I talk about. I’ve talked about that for years,” he told the Radio Today Tonight podcast about taking the Breakfast show national.

Sandilands said while he accepts it would remove some radio jobs from the market – some of which are helmed by his friends – stations should be investing in what actually works.

“I know the regionals cut it back and everything. It’s bad to cut off the pipeline of talent. That’s always a bummer. But they should have saved the money in capital cities,” he said on the podcast, out today.

Sandilands said he can’t understand why station managers and audiences accept syndicated Drive programs, but wouldn’t be willing to do the same for the earlier day part.

“I don’t understand why everyone’s okay with some times, day parts, being nationalised and others not. I feel it’s a bit of a racist thing towards Breakfast announcers. It can’t be just drive that it’s good… I just think, whatever’s the biggest, should be everywhere.”

KIIS Sydney’s sister station in Melbourne is yet to announce its new co-host for Jase Hawkins, with Polly ‘PJ’ Harding finishing up soon.

The network’s content boss, ARN’s Duncan Campbell, told Radio Today after this week’s survey that they are “closer” to the big reveal, after earlier blowing out the timeline.

“The drums are very quietly beating in the background as we start to increase the intensity of the tease as we head towards the announcement,” he said. “We’ll announce the show within the next month.”

You can listen to the chat with Kyle in this week’s Radio Today Tonight podcast.

Kyle’s got a point, however in practice I can’t see it working in all cap cities.

Melbourne, for a start, would be a hard sell to get it across the line. We all know how Melburnians feel about Sydney-based shows. Can K&J evolve their show sufficiently to appeal to an interstate audience without throwing the baby (Sydney) out with the bath water?

As for Brisbane, sure, it’d place direct competition pressure on Nova, but 97.3’s Robin, Terry & Bob have a predominantly different audience to K&J, so replacing them will only open up a market gap that a rival would surely jump on, sucking that audience up and taking it with them in the process. Which would mean K&J having to totally rebuild from scratch.

Say whaaaaaat?

He means discrimminatory, right??

Not syndicating the breakfast timeslot is Discriminatory towards breakfast announcers?

This is why education is important.

The problem, which Kyle seems to either ignore or doesn’t know, is his show won’t work in other markets.

It’s too Sydney for a start.

Then you have the problem of network shows seeking to be all inclusive whilst neglecting their prime market.

Then you get to issues such as time differences with Perth. For 6 months of the year he’d be off air before he was on. Besides, a show such as K&J would never work in Perth. Melbourne would be a massive failure too. Brisbane are hardly liable to embrace him in preference to local presenters and I can’ see K&J being a hit in Adelaide either.

Success in Sydney does not equate to success in other States and cities.

Kyle needs to be satisfied with the job he is doing in Sydney.

The Kyle and Jackie O is not Sydney centric – I think it could certainly work. Not sure it will work for the Industry as a whole, not much chance for emerging talent and loss of regional production jobs

The only way this would work if ARN rebrand 97.3 fm in brisbane to kiis 97.3 Brisbane. I’ve been saying this for years. I live in brisbane and if they rebranded 97.3 to kiis that would be so good. Novas breakfast show is shit. B105 is ok but 97.3 is boring. I find Kyle and Jackie are more natural. There honest in the way they do there show. You get what you get with Kyle he isn’t fake. Yeh he talks shit but it’s very entertaining. People don’t realise they will get an audience from the other stations. But they will lose all the oldies who listen to 97.3. As for Melbourne there losing half the show. So the right move would be to move jace to nights and run KJ national. Rebrand all the other stations to kiis.

Personally l would give Kyle a go in Melb. Breakfast there is not cutting through so why not give him 12 months down there and see what magic he can do in that market. Duncan Campbell has nothing to lose.

Interesting concept Kyle…..

ARN are two great breakfast shows that would fit the national syndication profile…..Christian O’Connel for the Gold network and K&J for Kiis.

National syndication especially in breakfast has not worked in the past…Richard Stubbs…The Cage etc, maybe now is the time to rethink the strategy…..and the same could work for SCA with syndication of the FOX breaking show into Sydney and move the 2 Day morning crew to drive time and syndicate.

Bit hypocritical to flame SCA for taking away regional breakfast shows and putting announcers on the scrap heap and then wanting to do the same because it suits Kyle’s ego,!

Shame on you Kyle

They won’t fit on 97.3, Mix 102.3 or 96FM. These stations belong in the Pure Gold network, not KIIS. Put KIIS on DAB-only in Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth and then by all means put the K & JO show on DAB in those cities. See how it goes then. If, for example, they made 97.3 a full-on KIIS station you would have 3 out of the 4 FM stations in Brisbane after the same audience! It would be a joke.

4KQ and Cruise should form a proper classic hits network and put that on DAB in Sydney and Melbourne for a start as 3KZ and 2WS. There are really 4 distinct networks at ARN – KIIS, Edge, Pure Gold and Classic Hits. They should stop trying to squeeze them into two.

@Pete what are you on about. Kyle & Jackie O would never have to evolve.
Hamish & Andy were successful in both Melbourne & Sydney and Kyle & Jackie O had better ratings than them in Sydney when they were all at 2day FM.
It can definitely be done.

I actually found his other comment on the podcast interesting, that’s he’s been lobbying to have the show streamed live on iHeart on VIDEO. I’d love to have this on in the morning instead of Sunrise or Today.
