First Listen: Sally & Erica debut on triple j Breakfast

triple j has a new Breakfast show, with Sally Coleman and Erica Mallet taking on duties from today (Monday, January 6).

Sally & Erica have officially taken the baton from Ben & Liam (via a brief stint from Lucy Smith, who moves to a new permanent slot on Mornings this week).

It won’t be an easy task, with triple j’s listeners notoriously loyal and hard to crack. However, it was clear from the off that their years of experience presenting on the station will hold the girls in good stead for the year ahead.

“Thank you so much if you’re already texting in,” said Erica.

“It is our first day on Breakfast and it is my birthday today!” said Sally.

Sally & Erica’s experience in the music industry – they’re also a hip hop duo known as Coda Conduct – shone through this morning, with their knowledge giving triple j’s music a renewed focus on Breakfast.

triple j content director Ollie Wards tells Radio Today that there’s been no change in strategy around the music, but Sally & Erica will bring a new dynamic to the way music is played on the show.

“Our clocks haven’t changed in terms of music, but certainly Sally & Erica are focussed on the tunes and will be getting through more music,” he says.

“It’s great to hear them really emphasise the music as the key content in the show.”

Highlights of the show included a chat with a bushfire fighter, and also get-to-know segment in the form of a Dolly-style quiz called ‘Are you a Sally or Erica’.

“This show is going to have a lot of heart and content that’ll have listeners learning as well as laughing,” says Wards.
