SCOOP: Matt Tilley departs Nova 100 after seven months on-air

Former Publisher

Much loved Melbourne radio personality Matt Tilley has parted ways with Nova 100 Melbourne, Radio Today can exclusively reveal. His last shift was Friday (November 29).

Tilley joined Nova in April this year to host Mornings, in a trial that ceased the network’s workday syndication across multiple markets in favour of more local content.

Radio Today understands that Smallzy will remain on Mornings on Nova 969 Sydney next year, and that there are no plans for the network to return to syndicated programming.

“Matt is a highly respected and quality broadcaster,” NOVA Entertainment’s chief programming & marketing officer, Paul Jackson, tells Radio Today.

“We would like to thank him for the great job he’s done on Nova 100 but the station is going in a different direction next year.”

NOVA Entertainment is yet to confirm a replacement for Tilley, but a likely frontrunner is Troy Ellis who joined Nova in March last year and in May reunited with Tilley on Mornings.

The former Fox FM favourite, 49, told Radio Today that he’s “loved” his time at Nova.

“Having been lucky enough to work on all 3 major FM networks, I’m now doing night school with Andrew Bolt to get some grumpy right-wing tendencies and maybe have a crack at the AM dial,” he says.

Tilley has previously worked in successful combinations with Jo Stanley, Tracy Bartrum and Meshel Laurie, the latter being one of KIIS FM Melbourne’s highest-rating breakfast shows.

He’s also worked with Studio 10 co-host Joe Hilderbrand on Triple M Melbourne and appeared on TV shows across Ten, Nine, Seven and Fox Footy.

Tilley’s extensive charity work has raised more than half a million dollars for Mercy Hospital, The Royal Children’s Hospital, Mental Illness Fellowship and P.A.N.D.A.

Seven months? There’s much more to this story.

As a young announcer this is scary that one of this countries top announcers with decades of good ratings loses his job. God help us all. They should try him on 2Dayfm Breakfast.

Seems someone likes Matt and Meshel: “Tilley has previously worked in successful combinations with Jo Stanley, Tracy Bartrum and Meshel Laurie, the latter being one of KIIS FM Melbourne’s highest-rating breakfast shows.”
Clearly, Tracy & Matt and Matt & Jo were the better combinations of the three (of the four, if you include Matt & Jane, also on KIIS). As for the KIIS ratings, did he ever break through 7%? If he did, it wasn’t for long…hardly a triumph.
Matt Tilley was given every chance to succeed on KIIS (two different co-hosts and a generous marketing budget with strong drive content to book-end the breakfast show) and then at Nova (where as morning host he was elevated to “tram and billboard” poster status, shown alongside the breakfast and drive teams).
Where to now for Matt? His comment about having a crack at the AM dial is quite self-aware, given he has now churned through nearly every FM network (except for Smooth and Gold). His ethnic-voiced gotcha calls would probably play well on the AM dial.
The days of CHR with talk-based content during 9 ’til 3 have surely passed. Stick to playing music. The shareholders will thank you.
