Mike Hammond returns to 2DayFM

Former Editor & Content Director

Veteran broadcaster Mike Hammond has resurfaced at 2DayFM after leaving WSFM late last year.

He has this week been hosting Mornings on 2DayFM, taking over after The Morning Crew with Hughesy, Ed & Erin.

The announcing vacancy at 2DayFM has come about as Jamie Angel prepares to move to Brisbane to become creative director of Triple M as well as anchor of the city’s Big Breakfast with Marto & Margaux.

Southern Cross Austereo (SCA) didn’t make a media announcement about the appointment, however on Monday morning Breakfast’s Erin Molan asked her co-hosts Dave ‘Hughesy’ Hughes and Ed Kavalee: “Hey guys, is there someone new doing something today on our network?”

Hammond then briefly joined the Breakfast show before taking the reins solo.

Hammond and Hughes referenced the last time they saw each other at the Australian Commercial Radio Awards (ACRAs) when they “nearly had a fight”, however the full story was not disclosed.

An SCA spokesperson didn’t elaborate much on the appointment, but did tell Radio Today: “We have ongoing regular announcers who feature on 2Day and Mike will be joining that roster when we need him.”

Hammond’s shift is followed by Afternoons, which is helmed by Mike ‘MC’ Christian.

In the most recent radio ratings, 2DayFM had a 3.3% share in Breakfast, 3.0% for 9am to 12pm, and 3.8% for 12pm to 4pm.

One asks why he left WS? He was doing really well there. Mike never seems to stay in one place long from what l see. His style is more suited to the WS music format. 2Day will struggle with their breakfast team and l cant see them growing it. In my opinion 3 hosts are difficult to listen to.

Wow.

Someone needs to have a few less shots in his coffee I think..

my favourite takeaways from that piece of gold was “welcome to week 5 of lockdown, how good is Sydney” and meaning it. wow

And the connection with the breaky team was electric..and by electric I mean there may have been a blackout ..

That aint cut through, that’s a mess. 2Day making smart choices once again.

No human should be subjected to Hughesy’s voice before midday.

Make that 4pm.

@Wow.

You really think the comment about “how good is Sydney?” was anything but sarcastic? I certainly sounded sarcastic to me.

Mind you, I agree about a few less shots in his coffee. It sounds like he’s trying a bit too hard to be cool.

I think a stalwart like Mike is a great choice for the station.
Best of luck. A nice addition.

Erin: “is there someone new doing something on our network?” Network? That’s a very TV term. Call it a station, it’s sounds more local and friendly, not corporate. I hope we never start calling our fave sports teams ‘franchises’. Anyway, all the best Hammo, good guy, top jock.

Wow, had a listen to 2Day workdays today. They are sounding more and more like a regional station with horrible segues, terrible production (some great, some very bad) and really sloppy level control.
