Nine expands further into news podcasting with new titles for The Age & The Sydney Morning Herald

Former Editor & Content Director

There are more short-form news podcasts in the mix, with Nine’s The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age launching twice-daily titles.

News with The Sydney Morning Herald and News with The Age will be released at 6am and 4pm each day, providing listeners with a three-minute news hit across local, national and world politics, business, sport and entertainment.

There are plans to expand the frequency of the news updates over time.

The bulletins will be presented by a roster of journalists including host of Please Explain, Nathanael Cooper, as well as Amelia Maguire, Sherryn Groch, Mex Cooper, Hannah Mills-Turbet and Nicole Precel.

Nine noted the new podcast additions strengthen the mastheads’ commitment to audio, and will be produced by the same team that delivered the award-winning investigative podcast Pong Su, as well as Naked City and Please Explain.

Executive editor of The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age, Tory Maguire, said the podcasts were a natural fit for the news brands.

“Launching these twice-daily news briefings is a natural step for the Herald and The Age, and allows us to showcase our agenda-setting reporting to a whole new audience,” she said. “We’re always looking for ways to make the most of our journalism and this brings together the success we’ve had with our daily newsletters and the podcast team so far.”

Nine has been increasing its audio-on-demand output in recent weeks, harnessing the power of its various newsrooms across the country.

Last week it announced the 9News Lunch Podcast, which will draw on the resources of 2GB, 3AW, 4BC and 6PR to produce 10-minute national news bulletins which are put out in the middle of the day.
