SEN giveaway offers listeners a share in racing greyhound

Former Editor & Content Director

The Sports Entertainment Network (SEN) is offering eight listeners a 1% share in a greyhound.

SEN recently bought a slot in the TAB Phoenix at the Meadows on December 18, where first prize is $750,000.

Troy Little, who hosts SENTrack’s weekly online event Inside Track Club, has been appointed to select the greyhound. He said he’d seek audience input and was after an “up and comer”.

“In a high-pressure cooker event like the TAB Phoenix, where you are up against some of the best greyhounds in the country, one thing you need to look for is early speed.

“You want a dog peaking 10 to 12 days out from the race,” he said.

SEN chief executive, Craig Hutchison, said the listener giveaway was the first of many ways audiences could connect with the upcoming Phoenix.

“We are thrilled to get our SENTrack audience involved and share the excitement of being an owner on the night of the Phoenix,” he said.

“Regulars who join the room each week of our Inside Track Club will also get the chance to join in the fun.”

SEN will also bring back Sale Sundays and announced Thrill of The Chase will return to 7Two each Sunday morning from November 21, as well as a new greyhound radio night on Mondays on SENTrack.

As an owner of a rescued retired racer that was abused, I find this competition disgusting.

Do better, SEN. For shame.

Absolutely disgusting. This just shows how out of touch radio truly is, dinosaurs at the helm. How can people promote the clear abuse to these beautiful animals. SEN are absolute peanuts.

Imagine what warped mind thinks animal cruelty makes for a fun competition. This makes me feel sick, disgusting. Why are you promoting this Radio Today?

    Hi BGR,

This story is by no means an endorsement of the competition or greyhound racing in general. To assume so would assume that I agree with everything I ever post about on here. That would be incorrect. I do not.

I can’t only post stories about things which align with my personal and political beliefs. There would be far fewer stories on the site if I did so, and I’m already accused of bringing my own (apparently hard-left) agenda to the news cycle here.

Even though I personally disagree with greyhound racing, that is not the opinion of everyone. Indeed as a website which discusses the industry, its machinations and its marketing, this story has a place beyond that anyway. If anything, it draws attention to the issue and enables people (both the industry and the wider consumer base) to consider if this is the type of activity which should be used to promote and market the medium of radio.

If I ignored the story, it wouldn’t go away. If I didn’t cover the competition, SEN wouldn’t call it off, pack it up and go home. It would still proceed. At least this way, people can discuss it, debate it and (if need be) hold them to account.

    Thanks,
    Vivienne – Radio Today

SEN. You have just shown your listeners that you have absolutely no care for the world. If you did some research you would understand what happens in the world of greyhound racing and training. What a mindless promotion. My prediction is that this will be pulled before it gets going when you realise what your audience and advertisers actually care about

48,891 uncompetitive greyhounds euthanised over the past 12 Years.
Under reporting of greyhound deaths and injuries.
179 trainers charged with illegal exports to Macau, China, a practice banned in 2013.
Greyhounds often given to vets as blood donors and then euthanised.
Exposes of live baiting.
On average, 3 greys die a day in racing.

A failing network flogging an amateur, cruel and unnecessary industry.

What a gross promotion, and what a gross article that does nothing more than replicate a press release, ignoring the gross reality of animal racing.

“Coming up next on The Old Gammon Breakfast Show, we’re giving away a Cock-fighting starter pack. Call now!”
